Re: Translate Italian newspaper article
On the afternoon of last Sunday on a lonely street in Bethany, Giovanni Martin Vita, age 25, of 20 Elliott Street, was found dead in his car. Medical Examiner William Winne gave a verdict of suicide. The death was caused, according to Lieutenant William L Schatzman, of the Bethany State Police Barracks by a 38 caliber bullet fired from the cartridge chamber of a teargas gun. The suicide was discovered by a motorist who recalled the fact of having seen Vita's car stopped in median. The deceased was co-owner of a Smoke Shop on Congress Avenue, and was the son of Mrs. Anna Carrano-Vita and the late John Vita, who for many years operated a shop in Congress Avenue. 5 brothers and 3 sisters also survive him. The funeral took place in the church of St Anthony, last Wednesday, under the direction of the Celentano funeral company. The burial took place in the St. Lawrence cemetery. The motive for the suicide is unknown.

Re: Translate Italian newspaper article
The word "private" (or "isolated") might be a better translation for "solitaria" unless, of course, the incident happened at Heartbreak Hotel.

Perhaps "undisclosed" would have been more appropriate...darkerhorse wrote: 16 May 2023, 01:37 The word "private" (or "isolated") might be a better translation for "solitaria" unless, of course, the incident happened at Heartbreak Hotel.
In any case, the gist of the translated article is accurate.

Re: Translate Italian newspaper article
The title of the article says The romantic suicide of Martin Vita. Does anyone know what they meant by that? Is that an Italian expression?

Re: Translate Italian newspaper article
Since the translation reads "The motive for the suicide is unknown," I wonder if there's a better translation than "romantic" such as "intriguing" or "mysterious" or "puzzling"? If they don't know the motive I doubt they meant "love-related" in a literal sense.
Maybe a native-Italian speaker can weigh in.

The full translation looks good. "Lonely" sounded odd but rang a bell, so I was just making a minor tweak in a jocular fashion. No intense offended.MarcuccioV wrote: 16 May 2023, 04:14Perhaps "undisclosed" would have been more appropriate...darkerhorse wrote: 16 May 2023, 01:37 The word "private" (or "isolated") might be a better translation for "solitaria" unless, of course, the incident happened at Heartbreak Hotel.

Mark, the deceased’s name was Martin Vita. The script is so small that you posibily misread the word “giovane” (i.e. young) for the name Giovanni. As for the word “lonely” before the word “street” I located another newspaper article, which was written in English, before the Italian article, about this tragic event, and it used the word “secluded” which is basically a synonym of “lonely” so all good. When I first read through the article my thinking as I read it was that the article was intending “remote” but as you have said we get the gist with “lonely”. Well done.

I searched on the topic and the following was the most informative: https://medium.com/the-intensities/roma ... 617259b572
I can't help wondering how the poor family must have felt reading the article in the newspaper, with such a title. It may not even have had any truth to it. It strikes me as being very insensitive. In the other news clipping that I read it just gave the facts. The family obituary just said that he died suddenly.

I suppose it's possible that despite the article stating the motive was unknown (or undisclosed), it may have been due to a domestic or relationship situation, perhaps...AngelaGrace56 wrote: 18 May 2023, 06:53daisy20 wrote: 16 May 2023, 16:39 The title of the article says The romantic suicide of Martin Vita. Perhaps. I guess it could’ve been anything. No one really knows what sort of mental anguish people are living with that leads them to make such a tragic decision. Very sad and such a waste of a life. (He died in September 1941 so a little before the bombing of Pearl Harbour. My American history isn’t good but I think the US “officially” entered the war after Pearl Harbour. My thinking is that it may have had something to do with WW2. Maybe he hadn’t enlisted or wasn’t accepted for some reason, and was being teased. Being an Italian American he may have felt displaced or torn between the two cultures.... It can’t have been an easy time for Italian-Americans, Italian-Australians etc. One day they were buddies, the next day enemies...)
