Thank you. I basically wrote in Italian what you have written, except for tenetela - I wrote down tienilo? The writer seems to separate the words into syllables which makes it harder to read because they (the syllables) then look like separate words, which don't always make sense. I didn't read "eterno". I read "e terno" but thought the writer was meaning "e tuno" (whoops). I also thought the writer intended to write "Baci".

I am having trouble uploading the photo that goes with this touching note that you translated for me.
It was sent by Rosa Liti to her (foster) daughter, Giovanna Perini Liti, who later became my grandmother. Giovanna was born out-of-wedlock and given away by her biological mother, whose last name was "Perini". Rosa and her husband, Sabatino Liti, took in my grandmother when she was three days old. Rosa had just lost a second newborn daughter and desperately wanted a baby girl, so they fostered my grandmother. They already had three fine sons. They were too poor to legally adopt my grandmother, but loved her as their own. Rosa wanted Giovanna to marry a local pig farmer, but my grandmother wasn't having any of that. She decided to marry another local man, Pasquale Mazzoli, who promised to take her to America. My grandmother married him to go on an adventure to the U.S.! Pasquale promised to come back to Narni, Italy, with his bride, but they never made that return trip. That explains why Rosa sent with photo and the note. She wanted her "Nina" to remember her and her love for her. I will share this with my cousins. Many thanks!!!! Jeanne

I’m sorry that you have been unable to upload the photo, Jeanne. It may have something to do with its size? Thank you for sharing the story behind the note. It’s both a lovely story and a sad story. I can’t imagine what it must have been like back then for mothers when their children left to travel to a country miles away, knowing they might not see them again, and having to rely on snail mail for any news.

After my grandmother left Narni, Italy, she never saw her foster parents again, much to the dismay of Rosa. My grandmother used to send them a dollar for coffee, even during the Depression. The photo is lovely. Thank you so much for persevering and posting it, Jeanne. You are welcome for the translation. It was very much a joint effort. I enjoy translating notes on back of photos because they often remind me of my mum's writing style. She always sent me photos with similar notes on the back. (Trips down memory lane!!!)
