Carrozza/Cottone/Macaluso from Monreale

I am working on my Carrozza ancestors and have tracked Benedetto Carrozza, the great grandgather back to Monreale, Italy. Has anyone ever run across the Carrozza name in their research? He was coming to America to join his cousin, Anthony Macaluso.

On another subject, Benedettos wife was Giovannina Cottone, anyone researching that family name?

What records do you already have for them (US?...Italy?)???

Please provide birth years, when & where they settled in the US. Virginia?
Children names? Their birth years & place of birth (Italy or US).

With the additional information, we can hopefully provide you with records that you don't already have and help with obtaining your goal.

Thank you! I would like to get over the brick wall I keep hitting when it coms to the Carrozza family. The only things I have been able to find are ships records for the greatgrandparents and a marriage certificate for my grandfather, Ignatius. MY father is deceased for many years and my Uncle was the baby of the family and doesn't remember much. His mother died shortly after he was born and there were the usual family problems which resulted in everyone not talking and records being tossed out.

I can't even find the family in the census records! When my grandfather was married he lived at 10 Delancy St, NYC then when my Dad, Benedict, was born they were living at 858 Hart St. He said once that he was raised in the Hell's kitchen area of NYC but I don't know if Hart St was in that area or not. Then they moved to Staten Island when he was young, and lived at 78 Cuba Ave.

Here is what I have on the greats:
I have Benedetto born Monrealy, Italy about 1866, coming to the US Jan 19, 1904 aboard the SS Germania. He lists his cousin, Anthony Macaluso, at 19 Stanton (image was smudged, not sure of the street), NYC as his sponsor. I can't find any naturalization or death records for him.

I also have Giovannina Cottone, my great grandmother, born about 1877 in Monreale and arriving in NY Dec 18, 1905 aboard the SS Algeria. She is going to meet her husband at 19-21 Stanton St. There are also 3 children, Ignazio, (my grandfather) born Jan 8, 1901, Giovanna born 1899 and Francesca born 1903. The ships records say the children were born in Palermo and Ignatius' marriage certificate confirms that.

That's it in a nutshell. I don't speak Italian but can read it a bit and that has deterred me from trying to contact any Churchs in Italy but I am ready to take the plunge now!

Terri....do not let the language stop you!!! There are many basic outlines for Italian genealogy terms, and we have many members here living in Italy and they are fantastic.....if you need something translated, or get stuck in any way, they are always willing to help......

Here are some sites to bookmark for language use, and I would invest in a good Italian/English dictionary.
Also, there is an excellent book by Trafford R. Cole, "Italian Genealogical
Records", fast, easy read, covers all the basics of Italian research with great insight and best of all, without all the fluff!!!

Yes, but there is a female, Frances Carozza, age 7, right below him. It's possible that they are orphans, but there are others reasons way they are in a orphanage. Will see what poster has to say.

I am well aware of the various reasons why a child could be placed in an orphange, but the poster gave no indication of this.....perhaps unaware.
If the poster cannot confirm a connection to the orphanage, then it is only a possibility.

JCSM, wldspirit, thanks for the information, I am in awe that you could find so much in such a short time!

I am intrigued with the possibility that the greatgrandmother may have remarried. It may well be my grandfather and Great Aunt in the orphanage, if the GGrandfather had died and the mother couldn't support them. Very, very interesting. It would also explain how my grandfather could send one of his children to an orphanage, if he had already been in one. It's so amazing that you could pull thge census information out so quickly. I was going through Brooklyn line by line, no wonder nothing turned up!
