Question on 1888 Late Marriage of Giuseppe Milici and Ignazia Ferraro__Belmonte, Mezzagno, Palermo, Sicilia.
They had 3 children in 1881/1885/1887.
On the 1888 record it looks like information on year 1877 ??, hard to translate entire statement.

Re: Question on Late Marriage Year
Yes, they also had a child in 1877, Act 9, Antonino Milici, son of Giuseppe Milici e Ignazia Ferraro.
Basically, at the bottom of the record four children are listed that were born from their union, before this marriage, whom they were recognizing as their own and legitimizing.
The other three children born to this couple were Angela Milicico, Salvatore Milici, and Giuseppe Milici. Their birth years are not noted but they probably tie in with what you have.

Re: Question on Late Marriage Year
No you are correct, there isn't. This would be because their father reported their mother as "his wife" and that's what the clerk wrote down on the birth records. As you know, the parents married some time after the children were born, therefore they were born "out of wedlock".teckat wrote: 15 Jul 2023, 16:13 Thank you very much---looking over birth records/ see nothing about illegitimate child ?

Re: Question on Late Marriage Year
In the period 1870-1929 in the Kingdom of Italy religious marriage was not recognized by the State. So the citizens, mostly Catholics, who celebrated the religious one, should have celebrated a second, civil and distinct one. It happened very often that a couple, married in church, lived together and only later got married in the town hall, legitimizing the children.

Re: Question on Late Marriage Year
In Northern Italy (and particularly in Lombardia) I never saw this.
All were married with a civil marriage and of course also in the church.
What I don't know is which marriage was made first, but certainly very near in time, if not the same day.
