Raimondi - Matera & Bari

Hoping someone can advise me as I seem to have hit a dead end. I'm trying to find any information on my maternal Great Grandfather-Francesco Paolo Raimondi. According to family recollections he was born in Matera in or around 1880, (my nonna spoke about having visited his family there as a child - she was born in 1919 so I can't imagine it was a trip undertaken often) he then became a cavalry sergeant and was based in Bari where he met and married his wife Beatrice Bellomo. He died in the early 1940's in Bari. myheritage, familysearch and ancestry seem to be failing me. Any help on where I should look next would be great.

First of all, we should understand where he was born.
I guess some member of the family moved to abroad at some time.
Can you tell us his/her name and some dates?

Here is a potential birth record - Francesco Paolo Raimondo, born in Matera on 22 February 1875 to Giovanni Raimondo and Filomena Epifania.

Bari's civil records are available on FamilySearch up to 1929, so it should be possible to locate Francesco and Beatrice's marriage record. Do you know approximately when they were married, or when Beatrice was born? Did your nonna have any older siblings?

Disregard my previous post -- I think I've found their marriage record!

Here, record number 550: in Bari on 22 October 1910, Francesco Paolo Raimondo, 35 years old, occupation soldato r[egio] esercito (soldier of the Royal Italian Army), son of deceased Giovanni Raimondo and deceased Filomena Epifania, and Beatrice Bellomo, 30 years old, occupation homemaker, daughter of Giuseppe Bellomo and Vita Piacenza.

Here is Beatrice's birth record. She was born in Bari on 20 December 1879.

And here's the marriage record of Beatrice's parents: in Bari on 24 April 1869, Giuseppe Bellomo, 25 years old, son of Michele Bellomo and Caterina Mincuzzi, and Vita Teresa Piacenza, 23 years old, daughter of deceased Michele Piacenza and Maria Resta.

One last post from me!

Here are the marriage documents of Francesco's parents, in Matera on 29 August 1863. The only marriage records Matera have for 1863 were the processetti, which is fortunate because these have a trove of information!

It contains the following records:

- The birth record and baptism for Francesco's father, Giovanni Raimondo. He was born approximately 29 August 1838 in the comune of Grumo Appula. He was a foundling, as his parents were listed as "ignoti" (unknown), and he was given to a wet nurse named Chiara Colantuono.
- The birth record and baptism for Francesco's mother, Filomena Epifania. She was born 2 May 1836 in Matera to Biagio Epifania, 40 years old, son of Innocenzo, and Maria Francesca Vella, 36 years old.
- The death record of Francesco's grandfather, Biagio Epifania, in Matera on 22 July 1844. He was 50 years old, and his parents were Innocenzo Epifania and Angela Ruggiero.
- The death record of Francesco's great-grandfather, Innocenzo Epifania, in Matera on 26 January 1833. He was 80 years old, and his parents were Saverio Epifania and Grazia di Maria. His wife, Angela, predeceased him.
- The death record of Francesco's grandmother, Maria Francesca Vella (spelled "Velli" here), in Matera on 6 March 1862. She was 60 years old, and her parents were Nicola Velli and Marianna Altieri.

Grazie mille!!! So sorry for the late reply but life has been busy and I’m only now getting back to the family tree. Your information and research has been invaluable! I had made an educated guess at his parents but you’ve filled in so many gaps for us. His father being a foundling means we’ve come to a dead end there. But there’s comfort in knowing that from him a family flourished. I’ve just told my mother (in her late 70’s now) about her grandparents and beyond and though it brought a tear to her eye it also made her very, very happy to know a bit more of her family’s story. On to the Bellomo side next……. lol

Thank you so much!!! It’s an absolute delight to be able to view these documents! I’ll keep on digging through the family tree…… I know that my grandmother referred to a cousin who was on the Andrea Doria but I’m not sure if that’s the Raimondi or Bellomo side (as both names appear on the ships records) and also that she was a relation of General Nicola Bellomo (so I need work that one out too.
