Historical Street Names/Location of Great Grandfather's Birth

Post by Cjking14 »

Hello,

With help from others in this forum, I've been able to identify the names of streets in Scorrano, Puglia where my ancestors were born/died. I am assuming most births and deaths occurred at their homes. The two street names I am looking to identify locations for are Via Porta Nuova, 28 and Via Largo Chiesa, 18. The second address is the birth place of my great grandfather. I am hoping to visit the location in May of this year and have attempted to find historical maps of Scorrano, but with no success. Is it possible to obtain historical maps of the town in order to identify these streets that don't appear to exist now?

Thanks so much!!

Try asking the town’s Pro Loco organization.

Is Pippo a nickname for Giuseppe?

Is Giuseppe ever spelled Giuseppi?

Yes, Pippo is a nickname for Giuseppe, and no, it's never spelled Giuseppi (unless it's a specific surname, of course).

Yeah, in America I've often heard it mispronounced, even by someone whose father is named Giuseppe.

Thanks so much! I will reach out to the town’s Pro Loco organization. We would love to see the location my great grandfather was born. I noticed between 1884 and 1901, three streets come up on birth/death certficates - Via Porta Nuova, Via Largo Chiesa, and Via Largo Frisari. They are fairly close together. Would it have been common for a family to move three times in this duration? Any other thoughts on this?

yes but that's typical of Sicily (though I'm not Sicilian)
