Understanding a birth record

Post by gae »

Hello. I have been reading through records and in my search I have found many birth records like the one I'm attaching. They are not my relatives, but I am curious as to what these records mean. Were they children who were given up for adoption or orphaned? So many of them in the early 1800s.

Hi there

Good question. So while this particular birth record from the town of Udine that you have posted here does appear to be for a foundling, not all of the births appearing in the register were for children of unknown parents. I’m understanding it to be an Annual (1812) Birth Register without pre-printed forms, so that’s why all the records look like this. It seems like the province of Udine hadn’t yet begun using pre printed forms.

BTW If you have any other records you would like us to look at, please do include the link to the online record like I have done here. It saves us looking for it so that we can (hopefully) make a correct response. Ta :)
