What is the 'Rondista' occupation?

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

What is the 'Rondista' occupation?

Post by cbrenke »

I have a civil birth/baptism record from Sicily in which both witnesses have rondista listed as their occupation.

I've looked at various online sources for the meaning of this occupation without luck.

Could we see that birth record?
Also, the year is very important as it could give us some clues.

There was a literary movement in the first part of the 19th century which developed in Rome, and which was inspired by the military rondo, so the word rondista can be found online in reference to that. I do, however, believe that the occupation of rondista that you are seeing in the records is military related. As part of the military, the rondista intervened in cases of public disorder in the streets and in public establishments which were open to the public, but habitually frequented by enlisted soldiers. The rondista supervised the conduct of enlisted soldiers. The translation of the word as sentry or security guard is more contemporary, I believe.

Possibly someone else has access to some books or online sources that I haven't found which may further explain the nature of this occupation.

The term "Rondista" in Italy refers to a night watchman or security guard. This role involves patrolling and ensuring the safety of premises during the night, often in residential or commercial areas.
