Can't find my Great Grandfather, need help

Post by nyrnd1 »

My Grandfather was born Francesco Antonio DeLucia in Cervino, Italy. I've attached the birth notice. In the early 1900's his name was changed to Francesco DeLucia Sposito. I'm not sure why but it was. I believe it was at the request of his Mother, my Great Grandmother Maria Rivetti DeLucia. My Grandparents were married, and the marriage notice had his name as Francesco DeLucia Sposito.
According to the Birth notice attached, his Father, my Great Grandfather was Antonio DeLucia of Cervino.
I believe my Grandparents Francesco and Immacolata DiNuzzo were married in Maddaloni as best I can tell.
So with all that said, can you help direct me how to find my DeLucia or Sposito ancestors? I cannot find anything about Antonio other than my Grandfather's birth notice though I did find some possibilities in the mid 1800's.
Of interest is my Grandfather did not use Sposito at all in the USA, just DeLucia.
As always thank you in advance for the great work you have always done on my requests.

Dennis

I believe the surname Sposito (Esposito) was often given to foundlings (abandoned children) in Italy. Maybe your great-grandmother knew something.

The side note on Francesco’s birth act states that his surname was rectified in 1910 from De Lucia to Sposito.
If you read through the act you’ll notice that there are 2 De Lucia present.
One is Nicola, the civil status officer and the other is Luigi, witness and also a municipal servant. They both signed at the bottom of the act.
More than likely Francesco’s surname was written erroneously and later rectified.

This is his father’s birth act, I think.
Antonio Sposito born in Cervino on July 30, 1849
Parents are Francesco Sposito ang Gelsomina De Lucia (must have been a popular surname)

Just found this.
Have you seen this family tree?
There are many Italian acts of the ancestors you’re looking for.
A lot of them.
I’ve noticed that, for example, on Francesco and Gelsomina marriage act both the surnames (De Lucia Sposito) are written, as you pointed out.
Have a look and tell us what you think.
There must be an explanation.
Sometimes only Sposito is written, other times they’re both present.

There is an annotation (page 2) on Antonio's birth act indicating a correction by the court, dated 26 November 1886, of his name...from Antonio Sposito to Antonio De Lucia Sposito.
