Ferrandina birth records

Post by TerreMartin »

I am looking for birth information about my maternal grandmother. The family name is Cirigliano. Her name was Teresa or Maria (not sure which came first). I believe her birthdate is 1886. Her brother was Giovanni. Her sister was Margherita. I believe her mother's maiden name was Rosa Gioia. She emigrated from Naples to the US on August 22, 1906.

I plan to visit Ferrandina in February, 2025. I would like to find where she lived. It would be great to have the name of a contact person in the town.

Grazie!

Hi Terre, welcome to the forum.

I didn't locate a Giovanni but going by what you have said I think the following should be your family:

1884 Birth No 336: Maria Teresa Cirigliano
Registered 7 December 1884 Ferrandina

Appearing before the official in the town of Ferrandina was Vincenzo Cirigliano, 44 yo, contadino (peasant/farmer) living in Ferrandina. He reported that at 5.15 pm on 5 of the current month, in the house in via Corso Vittorio Emanuele, no number, from Maria Rosa Giaioia (mispelling), his wife, a filatrice (spinner), living with him, was born a baby of female sex, who he presented to the official and gave the name of Maria Teresa.

Maria Teresa had one (full) older sybling and three younger (full) syblings as follows:

1882 Birth No 245: Giuseppe Cirigliano
Registered 12 October 1882 Ferrandina
Parents were Vincenzo Cirigliano, 42 yo, contadino, living Ferrandina, and Maria Rosa Gioia, his wife, a filatrice, living with him. Baby was born on 9 October 1882 in the house in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, No 26, and was given the name of Giuseppe.

1888 Birth No 87: Margherita Cirigliano
Parents: Vincenzo Cirigliano, 48 yo, contadino (peasant), and Maria Rosa Gioia, his wife a contadina. Margherita born on 23 February 1888, Corso Vittorio Emmanuele, Ferrandina.

1890 Birth No 64: Maria Caterina Cirigliano
Parents Vincenzo Cirigliano, 50 yo, farmer, and his wife Maria Rosa Gioia. Maria Caterina born 2 March 1890, in Corso Vittorio Emmanuele, no number, Ferrandina.

1891 Birth No 317: Nicola Cirigliano
Parents are the same people as is the address.
Baby boy given the name Nicola and born on 29 November 1891.

The reason I say full syblings is because there were possibly "half" syblings. Her father had been widowed when he married Maria Rosa:

1881 Marriage No 53: Vincenzo Cirigliano (Widower) and Maria Rosa Gioia (never married)
Ferrandina: 7 July 1881

Appearing before the official were:

Vincenzo Cirigliano, 42 yo, contadino, born Castelsaraceno (Potenza), residing in Ferrandina, the son of the deceased Nicola (Cirigliano), and of the deceased Teresa Cicchelli, who had both resided in Castelsaraceno when living.

And

Maria Rosa Gioia, 24 yo, filatrice, born in Episcopia (Potenza Province), residing in Ferrandina, the daughter of the deceased Emmanuele (Gioia) who had resided in Episcopia, and of the living Maria Giovanna Campanella, residing in Ferrandina.

(It looks like you are going to have two more towns to explore when you get to Italia. :) )

Oh my goodness. This is wonderful. As a child, I often heard of the town "Ferrandina" so now I will get to visit there. Just feeling the energy of my amazing grandparents will be such a joy for me. Thank you so much. I will be traveling and exploring with one my cousins. She is just as excited as I am. My father was born in Italy, but all he wanted in life was "to be an American." How ironic that his descendants want to know more about Italy. Grazie mille!!!!!
