Need Help searching for Marriage Record Cascio/Canatella, Salaparuta, Trapani, Sicily
Re: Need Help searching for Marriage Record Cascio/Canatella, Salaparuta, Trapani, Sicily
Anything is possible!
But the extracts of her birth and baptism in the allegati show only the name Caterina.
Farassino... nice finds!

No evidence of a middle name for Caterina has been found on any of the acts we’ve found.
Thanks Tessa, as you say anything is possible………

I wish I could flash learn italian! hahaha
Seems like a long shot, especially with a sister of the same name. Although italian naming traditions are crazy!
The mystery continues
Such an adventure...thanks again for your help!

I was going to look for death record for Catarina, maybe they married, she died, and he married Antonina - divorce is unlikely back then I would imagine.
Just playing through different possibilities....

Found a death act for Caterina... she died in 1865 at age 2 months....
Same parents.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 86/Lz6mpYg
So perhaps at the marriage, Antonina chose to use the name?
Or the official used the wrong birth act... since the sisters were close in years.
But now we know that the Caterina born in 1865 to Antonino Cannatella and Vincenza di Benedetto was NOT the person who married with Giuseppe Cascio in 1883.

GENIUS!!!
Sorry for Catarina, but glad to have confirmation she did not marry Giuseppe. That helps a lot even if it just rules out another marriage.
Wow, thanks!! Super curious on the name still but this gets us closer to an answer.

Re: Need Help searching for Marriage Record Cascio/Canatella, Salaparuta, Trapani, Sicily
I believe that when the couple wanted to marry, the clerk pulled the wrong birth act and wrote the extract of birth (which you see in the Allegati) using the incorrect information.
They were illiterate, so probably did not know. Even if they saw the document that the clerk/official prepared.
So the information the clerk filled out for the publication and the marriage was taken from the extract that they presented to him. But they did not know it was for Caterina and not Antonina.

Wow Tessa!!!!
This rules out poor Caterina.
Clearly a mistake was made and could not be verified by the spouses there and then as they both could not read or write.
But, and this puzzles me, both the acts (pubblicazioni and marriage) were read aloud. It says so at the bottom of the acts.
Maybe in a way that it could not be fully understood.
Still very strange. Names and surnames should have been pronounced correctly.
Hope you don’t need this for an Italian citizenship as to rectify those acts may take for ever.

that makes a lot of sense, and the US Census records I have say they are, or claimed, illiteracy. But yes still strange.
I do need them, I believe, for citizenship, which is a pain if I need to rectify them
I have so much other supporting documentation, plus now the death notice for Catarina seems definitive proof of an error, but we'll see.
That marriage certificate is the only problem document, so close!!!!
Thank you again

Re: Need Help searching for Marriage Record Cascio/Canatella, Salaparuta, Trapani, Sicily
To get the marriage document corrected...
Contact the Italian consulate in your jurisdiction - or the relevant office.
Submit a formal request for error correction. Specifically state what the error is and what you want the correct information to show.
Provide ALL of the supporting documents:
Birth act of Antonina (dated 1863)
Birth act of Caterina (dated 9 September 1865)
Death act of Caterina (dated 5 November 1865)
Marriage act of Giuseppe and "Caterina" (1883) Extract of birth act from the Allegati showing that the wrong birth act was provided.
Birth act of Mattia showing parents as Giuseppe and Antonina, and indicating Antonina as his wife.
You probably want to get started on this. As Farassino says, it may take quite a while.
Good luck!
