Stumpo lineage

Post by DonPietro »

I am trying to find out information about my paternal grandparents, Pietro Stumpo married to Gaetana Filice. Based on my dad’s birth year, 1921, I’m guessing they emigrated (from Calabria) to the US in the 1910’s. They lived in Newark NJ, and both died when my dad was a young child. I’m also hoping to track back to my great grandparents, whose names I do not know.
Thanks.

Thank you, PippoM for researching this, and then posting what you found. The information you provided most likely pertains to my grandparents… however, I noted a discrepancy in the name of my grandmother. I went back and looked at my father’s birth certificate, certificate of baptism, and certificate of marriage. In all three, my grandmother’s first name is Gaetana, not Marie. In two of the three documents, her last name is spelled ‘Filice’. On my dad’s cert of marriage, however, her last name is spelled ‘Felice’, which is the name you found. I’m thinking perhaps my grandmother preferred the name ‘Gaetana’, so she went by that name.

One of my primary reasons for researching this is to determine if I’m eligible for dual citizenship. My understanding is that I would potentially be eligible, if my grandparents did not become American citizens after they emigrated to the US. Would you happen to know who I should contact to determine if they renounced their Italian citizenship? Thanks.

It is very usual that a female is given a double name starting with Maria (you do NOT have to think of something like first and middle name used in the USA: in Italy, all the names before a comma, if present, are considered as a first name; as to the use, it's a personal issue...for instance, my cousin is Maria Rosaria (on documents), I call her Rosaria, and her husband calls her Maria.
As to the question of where to get a certificate of non-naturalization, we have a whole section about citizenship issue in this Forum. You can take a look there. However, I think you should turn to NARA and/or USCIS.
Also, census records can tell if a person was naturalized at some time.

Do you have any USA records for Pietro?

On his WWI registration card, he indicates that he started the naturalization process.
He checked "declared"

On his arrival manifest in 1908 (leaving wife Gaetana Felice in Rogliano) I do not see any numerical annotations used for naturalization...

No, I do not have any US records regarding either of my paternal grandparents. They both died when my dad was quite young... I’m pretty much starting at ground zero, except for their names and that they lived somewhere in Calabria.

Regarding dual citizenship, I’m still somewhat unclear as to the exact requirements, so I need to do further research. After watching a few YouTubes, however, it appears to hinge on whether I have Italian ancestors they did not renounce their Italian citizenship. Based on what you wrote, it would appear Pietro began the process of becoming an American citizen. I will do as Pippo suggested and contact the USCIS.

Grazie, Tessa!
