Re: Marriage for Giuseppe Currao/Letteria Bonanno
Marriage No 206: Giuseppe Corran and Letteria Bonanno
Messina: 17 July 1880
Groom: Giuseppe Corran, 24 yo, bracciale (day labourer), born and residing in Messina, son of Angelo Corran, and Anna Ullo, who both resided in Messina.
Bride: Letteria Bonanno, 23 yo, civile, born and residing Messina, daughter of Giuseppe Bonanno and Caterina Angliera, both residing Messina.
Daisy, I just need to check on something, because while the marriage record records Giuseppe’s surname to be “Corran” I believe it should be “Corrao” as you have stated (or maybe even “Currao” as written at the base of the marriage record. Both names Corrao and Currao appear in Messina today. I’ll check the indices and publication. The surname Angliera also I am not sure about.

Here is Giuseppe’s Birth Record No 95 on Page 98. I’m reading Corran (although, just to confuse us even more, it might even be Corrau – so I think further research needed on this one). I’ll come back and translate it for you later.

I've located the birth of their first child Anna, which clearly records the surname "Currao" With further research, and as you go back further, I'm sure the correct spelling will hopefully be clearer.
Birth No 1025: Anna Currao
Registered Messina: 8 September 1881
Parents: Giuseppe Currao, 26 yo, bracciante, living Messina and Letteria Bonanno, his wife, a filatrice, living with him.
Born Via Fata Morgana, No 29. A daughter given the name Anna.
Side Note: Anna Currao marries with Giovanni Vita on 28 October 1899. Act No 312.

Hi Angela, thanks so much for finding those for me. I believe the correct spelling is Corrao, but it's spelled differently on almost every document I locate so it's very confusing!
Thanks again,

Better late than never, here is the translation of Giuseppe's birth record. I'm not totally convinced about the surname Corrao for this family - maybe it was changed (italianized?) somewhere along the line. As you go back further it might be clearer.
Birth No 95: Giuseppe Corran
Registered Messina on 11 April 1856 and born the same day.
Angelo Corran, 29 yo, facchino (Porter), presented a male baby born from Anna Ullo, his wife, 19 yo, living with him, and from himself the declarant. He was given the name Giuseppe and was baptised on 13 April 1856 in the parish of S. Nicolo.

Re: Marriage for Guiseppe Currao/Litteria Bonanno
Hello Daisy and Angela,
I was amazed to find this post when I did a web search for Letteria Bonanno, my great grandmother (Yes, I also encountered variant spellings of her first and last names, but prefer this one.) Via a hint from Ancestry on a cousin's family tree, I learned about Letteria for the first time! I found out when she came through Ellis Island, that she died in 1920, and her grave is located in Calvary Cemetery in NY.
Letteria and Giuseppe's daughter Anna was my grandmother and we lived with her when I was a child. We always spelled her maiden name "Corrao." She was married to Giovanni (John) Vita and they emigrated from Messina in the 1890s. The mystery to me is that no one in my family ever mentioned Letteria or Giuseppe Bonanno emigrating several years after Anna. She never spoke about her parents and as a child I never thought to ask.
Ancestry doesn't show that Anna Corrao had any siblings. Have you found any siblings or anything else of interest since this post. Also wondering if Daisy and I are related.
Thanks,
nadjavi

Welcome to the forum Nadjavi!!!
According to a Family Tree on Family Search, Anna had the following five syblings:
Maria Corrao (1884-1955) (married Natale Mollura)
Natala Corrao born 1886
Angelo Corrao 1889-1904
Giuseppe (1891-1894)
Giovanni born 1894 married Rosina Ruggero
Two people have contributed to the tree. If Daisy doesn't chime in you might want to contact the two people who have contributed to said tree. Here is the link to the tree: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedig ... t/GZCK-RX7
Best to you.
