Help with Surnames Cutinello and Frammulare - late 1800's Italy
Hello. I am researching my Italian family history and have hit a roadblock on information concerning my great grandmother's parents. My great grandmother, Caterina Cutinello, married my great grandfather Felice Ricci in Manhattan on January 17, 1904. Caterina was born in Italy in March 1881. Caterina's parents - Giuseppe Cutinello and Rosa Marie Frammulare - are listed on the marriage certificate as born in Italy too. Caterina lists as her residence in Manhattan at the time of marriage as West 46th Street.
I am trying to determine what part of southern Italy Caterina and Giussepe Cutinello and Rosa Marie Frammulare may have come from. I have searched Ancestry.com and basically every other genealogy site available including ITALIA.INDETTAGLIO.IT and Ellis Island records. Wondering if anybody has any suggestions on where to go next?

Hello,
I found the marriage.
How do you know her birth date?
Do you know if her parents moved to the USA, too?

Re: Help with Surnames Cutinello and Frammulare - late 1800's Italy
Hello. Thanks so much for your response. I have some new information. I had requested what I thought was Caterina Ricci’s Immigration A-File from the US National Archives. That file indicated a birthdate of 3/16/1884. NARA responded with additional identifying information showing that this file pertains to a different Caterina Ricci - from Massachusetts not New Jersey. Now I know that this birth date is incorrect.
US Census documents show Caterina’s birth year differently:
1910 Census – she indicates her age is 28 which suggests a birth year of 1882.
1920 Census – she indicates her age is 36 which suggests a birth year of 1884
1930 Census – she indicates her age is 47 which suggests a birth year of 1883.
Her Marriage record of January 17, 1904 indicates her age as 22 suggesting a birth year of 1882.
I do not know whether Caterina’s father Giuseppe Cutinello or her mother Rosa Maria Frammulare ever came to the US. I have searched Ellis Island records and have had no luck. I have also searched NYC records because Caterina’s Marriage Records lists her address as 455 West 46th Street in what I assume is NYC with no luck. My surviving relatives have no information whatsoever concerning her parents and very little information concerning Caterina.
For my great GF – Felice Ricci – records are plentiful though. I was able to locate his Italian birth and baptism records and his court records showing he naturalized in the US in 1904. I’m also stumped by Caterina indicating on US Census Records that she too naturalized in 1904. I have found no court records indicating that she filed papers to naturalize and I have been unable to locate an A-File for her through the US National Archives.

Re: Help with Surnames Cutinello and Frammulare - late 1800's Italy
The birth of this Felice is not the right one.
This Felice’s surname is Ricca and not Ricci and the parents do not match those on the marriage act,
These are Giuseppe and Anna Selvaggio.
Those of your Felice are Rocco and Catarina Salinardo.

Having said that. I am also very doubtful that some of the surnames involved are correct.

Re: Help with Surnames Cutinello and Frammulare - late 1800's Italy
Thank you for this response! This is great to know. We were struggling to identify the names on the birth record too - I think we were a bit too hopeful and jumped the gun on concluding this was Felice's record. Thank you again for reviewing this document! This genealogy search has been so fulfilling for me and my family and our journey continues.
With regard to your statement that the surnames may not be correct, is there somewhere I can search to try to tie down the correct surnames? My relatives who might have known have since passed. Thank you again!

In the 1920 Census there's one Rocco Ricci, son, born in Italy.
I thought he might be from a former marriage, and here he is

Re: Help with Surnames Cutinello and Frammulare - late 1800's Italy
This is unbelievable! Yes - Felice had a son Rocco from his first marriage. His first wife passed away shortly thereafter. I can't thank you enough for searching for and finding these records.
Re: Help with Surnames Cutinello and Frammulare - late 1800's Italy
I should add that for years we had been confused as to whether they came from Ruoti or Rieti. Again these are amazing finds!

So, you knew his town of origin sounded like Ruoti or Rieti? You should have told that!RS2025 wrote: 06 Feb 2025, 22:23 I should add that for years we had been confused as to whether they came from Ruoti or Rieti. Again these are amazing finds!
