Luigia Ronconi

Post by danimcg123 »

Hi,

Just looking for some help tracking down the woman mentioned as the midwife Luigia Ronconi of this birth certificate linked below, have looked through records for Licenza but currently coming up with nothing, any help would be requested of information regarding Luigia or the house in the translation mentioned below which I got from PippoM (still really grateful for that it has helped me find a new angle of research and I have contacted the Archives for the baby's record)

"The midwife Luigia Ronconi, 28 years old, declared the birth. The baby was born on Oct 31st, 1903 in a home situated in via del Giardino. The mother was "a woman who doesn't want to be mentioned". The midwife gave the baby personal name Alfredo and surname Perini. The baby was entrusted to Sisto Corsi to be taken to the Orphanage of Santo Spirito in Sassia in Roma, with the stuff that was found next to him (my guess is that the midwife was given the stuff by the mother, as the baby was not actually "found", but was born in a known home), i.e. a cotton bend with a medal representing Our Lady, a cap, a bodice, and two diapers, one of them coloured"

I see Luigia appearing as midwife in a number records which follow this one and assisting at births in other locations in the town. In those records, the mothers and their husbands are named. I think you’d be wasting your time trying to track down additional info about her. Concentrating on the address in the record might be a better use of time.

Hi Dani,

I haven't abandoned you. I've just been really busy with personal things, but did get a chance to go through some of the records around the time of the birth of Alfredo. Other than looking at the locations of the births in those records, I don't know how else one would ascertain if a family lived on a particular street. I believe there were census records in 1900 in Italy, as in the U.S., but those are not online, and I'm not familiar with the format of the Italian census from that time period, and whether or not it would contain addresses, as in the 1900 U.S. census. In 1900, there was an infant born on via del Giardino. The location in that infant's record also had no number on the house, as in Alfredo's. But I haven't been able to find anything about that location, so I can't tell you if the house had more than one family living there and, if it did, whether or not the people living there were related to each other. That child was born to an Antonio Iacovelli, age 43, and his wife, Innocenzia Rufini . Her age is not given in the record. The infant's name was Ignazio Eugenio Iacovelli born on June 2, 1900. Record #24. On Aug 27, 1906, there was a female infant born at a house at #21 via del Giardino, Record #30. The father, Pietro Proietti, age 32, and the infant was Luisa Proietti. Interesting is that the word proietti means "cast offs" and is used for abandoned children in Italy, and that the mother in this record was a woman who did not wish to be named and was also a woman to whom the father wasn't married, or in any degree was related which would have proven an obstacle to her recognition of the infant. So concentrating on the address in your record wasn't really a good idea. Sorry if I gave you false hope.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Dani. Most of us here are volunteers, and often posters don’t come back or say “thank you” when they don’t get immediate responses to their queries. So I really do appreciate that you took time to write a nice response.

If you do plan a trip to Licenza, you may want to contact the Pro Loco organization there. It’s a tourist organization. Here’s a link to its website.

https://www.licenzaturismo.it/contatti.php

I also found on this website an email address to contact the municipality there. The address is

permesso.licenza@tin.it

Possibly you can get info about the street in Alfredo’s record from one of these sources.

Dani,
if you are going there, let me know.
I live in Roma, and was in Licenza several times for beautiful hikes in the Monti Lucretili.
I also slept there in their "castle" along my way on St. Benedict's Path.
