Thank you for doing that, I'll keep researching.AngelaGrace56 wrote: 20 May 2025, 06:54 Hi again
I went through the death indices from 1900-1910 but didn't see any evidence of the names Carmine, Carmino, di carmine etc there in Lauria.

All good. So sorry that Lauria isn't the birth town.

Re: Laori?
Can it be Lauro? When was he born?

Re: Laori?
Pippo, according to the Declaration of Intention, on top of previous page, it looks like he was born on 11 October 1863

There is some conflicting info about his birth date, some documents have him down as 1865.AngelaGrace56 wrote: 21 May 2025, 09:46Pippo, according to the Declaration of Intention, on top of previous page, it looks like he was born on 11 October 1863

@ACM7
Hi there
It's a little bit like trying to find a needle in a hay stack, because as I understand it, we don't know the town he was born in, we don't really know his correct surname, nor do we know his exact date/year of birth. You said you have other documents with conflicting info. Are you able to note down the information appearing on each of those documents including the relevant name of the document. (Also, what were the names of his children?) Any other information which you think might help, like did he return to Italia at any point?

Re: Laori?
I'll have to provide the info in installment. For starters, I don't believe he ever went back to Italy.
His children were, in order:
Giuseppe Antonio (Died before 1900)
Angeline
Theresa
Felix Anthony
Ralphia
Raleigh
Jacob James
Joseph Anthony
Frank Anthony
Carmella
He didn't seem to use any Italian naming traditions for his kids, but I have noticed he uses Antonio/Anthony for four of his children's middle names. Also, he only got birth certificates for his last three kids.
As for his birth date, October 11th seems to be right, but on his Declaration of Intention he puts down his birth year as 1863, while on most other documents such as census' and his marriage record he uses 1865, and his gravestone and death record says 1868.

@ACM7
Thank you for your last post here.
And so all the other documents you have, list his birth town as Laori? Is that correct?

Re: Laori?
A birth place, other than "Italy" has only been included in two documents, his naturalization which had Laori, and one of his children's marriage certificates which had Naples.AngelaGrace56 wrote: 23 May 2025, 04:30 @ACM7

Re: Laori?
I went through the birth records again for the town of Lauro searching for Francesco's birth record but I didn't find it and I didn't see any evidence of the name Carmine/de Carmine/di Carmine or anything like it, for the years that had indices. It's a bit of a mystery. I wonder if he told the truth about who he was and where he was from?
I notice that no one else is chipping in here so my thinking is that possibly those that are really experienced with this type of research feel that maybe a lot more info is needed to locate the correct birth town? So, I'm wondering whether what you might like to try, if you haven't already done so, is DNA testing - but not yourself - to get the best results you need to test the oldest and closest person living who would share a percentage of Francesco's DNA. It is just a suggestion.

I agree, there is a lot more info that is needed (unless I get lucky) to find Francesco's place of birth. I have done some perfunctory work on DNA, but I'll definitely do some more. Thank you for all your work on this, one of your ideas has given me something to research a little farther.AngelaGrace56 wrote: 23 May 2025, 06:47 I went through the birth records again for the town of Lauro searching for Francesco's birth record but I didn't find it and I didn't see any evidence of the name Carmine/de Carmine/di Carmine or anything like it, for the years that had indices. It's been a pleasure working with you. Hopefully someone else might stumble on this thread soon with added insight to the name of the birth town.
Re DNA testing, I had mine tested many years ago. It was a complementary test. While I was volunteering at a library in the genealogy section one day, a colleague and I began talking about the pros and cons of DNA testing. Fortunately for us, an Ancestry rep visiting for the day to promote Ancestry DNA overheard us and asked whether we would like him to send each of us a complementary testing kit. Of course we said yes and several weeks later our kits arrived. I’ve been so surprised by how accurate it has been and while it hasn’t “spelled out” the two (neighbouring) towns that my parents were born and resided in, it has come very close to it. My ancestral towns certainly show up in my matches' trees. I can also run a search on the birth locations in my matches’ trees and also surnames. A few years later I downloaded the raw data and uploaded to Gedmatch as well. I prefer Ancestry as it has given me so many more matches.
