Carlo Garegnani da Castelleto di Cuggiono, Lombardia- trying to locate documents

Post by danieg75 »

I'm looking for Italian documents for my great-grandfather Carlo Garegnani (birthday Dec. 26 1886)
(atto di nascita o atto di battesimo) who is from Castelleto di Cuggiono, Milan. I've searched in Antenati but am having trouble finding any information. Any advice?

I have all of the information for when he emigrated to the United States in 1902, including his US Declaration of Intention and his 1930 US census information.

Is this his Declaration of Intent? in 1917...

Birthdate appears to be 25 January 1886.
Residence in St. Louis, Missouri.

And another Declaration of Intent in 1925... same information.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... n&groupId=

His Petition for Naturalization in 1929...
Here he lists his DOB as 26 December 1886.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... n&groupId=

Name change.... from Carlo Basilio Garegnani to Charles Garegnani in 1935
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... n&groupId=

Arrival...1902...line 16

Death of daughter Rose in 1967 indicates mother as Louisa Grassi.
Maybe finding a marriage of Carlo and Luisa in Missouri will show his parents' names.

The birth acts in Cuggiono are missing years 1882 through 1886...
You might want to write to the town to request Carlo's birth act.

In 1890, there is the birth of one Rosa Giuseppa Garegnani (possible relative?)
#109
Father: Eugenio Garegnani, 41, peasant farmer
Mother: Maria Bossi, 40, his wife

Wow! Thank you so much Tessa, for all of this information and help. I've reached out to the parish in St.Louis, Missouri where Carlo and Luisa likely were married about the sacrament certificate to see if their parents names are on a marriage certificate.

I will be in Cuggiono this summer with my family (July 3-5) and will go to the town hall to request the records. Do you think I should also inquire at the churches, possibly for baptism records? (San Giacomo e Filippo or San Giorgio Martire)

I've done a search in the white pages for Garegnani and there are many in Cuggiono, Inveruno, Bernate Ticino, Mesero... no doubt there are a lot of distant cousins!

Thank you so much again, and any additional advice is very much appreciated.

Be sure to write to the town of Cuggiono to alert them to your visit. Civil records offices are not open on a regular or daily basis. If they are aware of your request, they may be prepared.

As to the church... you can do the same (let them know you are coming) but access or response is sketchy. In your letter, you may wish to offer a donation for the help.

You might also want to write to "potential relatives" in Cuggiono to let them know you will be visiting. They may be able to assist.

If you hear back from the Church in St. Louis with parents' names, let us know and we can continue a search for more records.

Good luck!
