First time I looked at this branch (GGF’s mother’s line), it was on microfilm at the local FHC. Even after they came online, I never found her death record in Messina… because she died in Milan. I was never going to look in Milan! Thankfully sometime in recent years, they indexed Milan on Family Search, and she showed up in my recent search.
But… there are two Stato Civile morti indices for 1944 and I skimmed through what I thought was the relevant one (they divide by gender, and are alphabetized), but couldn’t find her in the Ve pages. But there are seven pages of registries, and she died in October, and in the ones I’ve looked at, record 180 is still in January or February.
Ummm any idea which Parte/Serie/Register I should look at for this record? I looked at most that were 1-199, etc ie not starting at 598… unless the “certificate 180” is actually wrong. I wish Family Search was a little more specific.

Re: Death in Milan, 1944
Hi
I've taken this info from the ten year indices. It's a little bit criptic as to the year she died. It seems to be saying 1945? It also states Record No 180?

Re: Death in Milan, 1944
Oh, thank you both. I didn’t see there was a 10-year index because I went straight to the index for 1944.
Her existence there is a little strange. Wartime, maybe she was living somewhere she thought was safer. Why do you think there was such a delay in reporting? I mean, war could be the answer, but it is five months…
Also odd that she’s listed as a widow of Giovanni (whose death record I never found, and who may or may not have stolen bank money as bank president and disappeared), because she’d had a second husband with whom she had at least two kids. Well, maybe whoever reported it didn’t know.

The person died on 14 Oct. 1944 in sant'Angelo Lodigiano, this is the transcription on the register of Milano, made in 1945, of the original death act, as she was resident in Milano.
