Italian Clan

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Do Italian-Americans have a term for extended family, like the way "clan" is used by Scots?

And, is "blood kin" redundant?

I've only personally heard the term "famiglia" used in this context -- research indicates some possible terms of "genere" & tribu" as alternatives, but I'm unfamiliar with either of them...

"kin" can sometimes refer to non-blood close relations, so I'd assume "blood kin" could be appropriate, but I've never seen it used other than colloquially...

Famiglia is the term of which I am familiar. It doesn’t just consist of blood and relatives by marriage but also to godchildren.

A godchild who is not blood is accepted into the famiglia as a true member of the family.

I’ve never known any different.
