Chiavone and Gallo

Post by gallohjc »

This site has been wonderful for researching my husband Joe’s Sicilian families. I now have new info which I really need help with. Joe’s Grandmother, Maria Chiavone, born 25 July 1894 in Calascibetta, Enna, Sicilia, daughter of Liborio Chiavone and Maria Santa Salerno. Maria was the only child born there, all her siblings were born in Gangi, Palermo, Sicilia.

Maria and her older sister, Gaetana arrived New York in 1909, their father, Liborio arrived New York 1907. Believe he arranged marriages for his daughters prior to his return to Sicilia. We thought her marriage to Giuseppe Gallo, Joe’s Grandfather, on 10 May 1919 in Philadelphia, PA was her 1st and only. However, I have found 2 additional marriages in Philadelphia, PA.

1st to Santo Bevacqua or Bevilacqua 30 November 1911. Santo born about 1882 in Italy and died 8 March 1915 in Philadelphia, PA. Would like to know Santo’s correct last name, birth date, location and parents.

2nd to Epifanio LaRocca 30 October 1915. Epifanio was born 31 January 1889 in Italy, son of Salvatore and Santa LaRocca. Would like to know Epifanio’s birth location, date of death and mother’s surname.

Maria and her sister were the only children to live in U.S. Liborio, his wife and 5 children went to Argentina in 1913, settling in Rosario.

This info would certainly complete this family for me. I’m from the “Silent Generation” so time is not on my side and I’m hoping to leave our younger generations with as much correct info as possible.

Thank you for all past assistance and looking forward to what I hope will be additional positive assistance.

Farassino, in looking for Epifanio LaRocca Family Search has a death date of 7 November 1918 in Resuttano. Possible he went home and died there in 1918?

An Epifanio La Rocca dies in Resuttano on 12 July 1918 (I don’t see any on the day and month you’ve mentioned) but it’s not your Epifanio.
This one, sadly, was a baby aged 2 and a half months. #54

Ok, last effort. Resuttano deaths 1925 - I don’t read Italian but it looks like a reference to a 1918 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania death certificate with a name error. Same parents but first name is different (error) and Epifanio is noted. It’s #5 of Part II.

Yes, that’s him!

It’s the translation/transcription of the death act presented by his father Salvatore, 67 yo, to the clerk in Resuttano dated 22 May 1925.
Epifanio died on 7 November 1918, aged 29, at 12.30 in the Philadelphia General Hospital.
The cause of death was “influenza”, certified by the hospital doctor.
He was buried on 10 november at the Holy Cross Cemetery.

The marginal note corrects the name and the date of birth, both written incorrectly.
Continues on act #11 of the same register with the sentence for the modification of the details above.

I add the link to the transcription for reference.

You’re very welcome Helen.
We enjoy doing what we do and it’s very rewarding when we manage to make somebody happy.
Kind regards

P.S.
We still need to find Santo Bevacqua (I presume this to be his surname).
Anything more you can tell us?

Re Santo Bevacqua - ship Manifest: dep Naples 25 April 1906. Arr NY 9 May 1906. Age 24. Last res. Gangi
Join his cousin, Pasquale Bevacqua, 757 So. 7th St., Phila., PA

Philadelphia Marriage Certificate: Santo Bivacqua born in Italy 10 April 1882 or 1883.

Death Certificate: Santo Bilaqua age 32, born 1883 in Italy, parents names unknown, died 18 March 1915 and buried 19 March 1915 in Holy Cross Cemetery. Cause of death Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

There are misspellings of his last name.

Birthplace could be Gangi, Palermo, Sicilia where Maria’s family are from.

Death Certificate completed by employee of Philadelphia General Hospital who did not know Santo.

This is all I have for Santo. Antenati births don’t include the 80’s for Gangi.

Wishing you good luck on this search.
