Re: SurNames being changed during imagration

Post by rfornal »

Well, the process should be the same - if there was an application filled out (probably close to the time that he was born), probably by yor father's parents, their information should be on it ... don't forget the simple things like checking for the birth certificate also ...

I'm not sure what the process in Canada would be to obtain the paperwork, but it shouldn't take too much research to determine where to begin.

Good Luck!

I live in Canada and we have Social Insurance Numbers here..SIN which are similiar to the social security numbers in the United States.

I just filled my childrens cards out and had to include our names in them including my maiden name info and I believe place of birth.

Here is a link to some general information about the program.

http://www.sdc.gc.ca/en/gateways/topics/sxn-gxr.shtml

Richiee...what was your Dad's Date of Birth and death? When did he come to Canada...? He may have come through Halifax at pier21. You can write them..(I'll need to look up the website and toll free phone number). If he came in the '50's, the manifest won't be found online. You will need to call the toll free number on the pier 21 website and request a form which allow you request the manifest. I just got one for my mom.

Hope this helps a bit...

nuccia

Can you get a copy of his death certificate? This may list his parents names and place of birth.
