Desios of Salerno

Post by danidesio »

Hello! I am hoping to either connect with family or find more information about my 2nd great grandparents. My records indicate that her maiden and married name were the same, and I'm trying to find a way to verify this. I feel like I have extensive information on their children and all the subsequent branches, but would love to know more about them before they immigrated to the United States. I'm also willing to help where I can as I have connected with a few relatives through Ancestry. Here is what I DO know:

Utilizing the Salerno archives, I believe I was able to verify the following paternal line of my grandfather, Felix Desio, at least back to 1828 in the region.

(1). Felice Desio (b. before 1828) married Caterina Rocco (b. about 1830, Salerno) and had at least one son:

(2). Costantino Desio b. 18 Jul 1848 Olevano sul Tusciano, Salerno
married Mariantonia - we are unsure but believe her maiden name was Langone. They had at least three children:

(3)
  • Caterina Desio (b. about 1875) married T Tarantano(1867). They had a son James Tarantino (1888). I do have access to some of this tree as well if anyone is interested.
  • Giuseppe Desio (b about 1870) married Maria Giovanna Joanna Rocco (1868) and had at least 2 sons, Tommaso (1886-1960) and Mosè De Sio Jr. (1892-1961) both of whom had children.
  • Felice Desio, b. 22 Oct 1872 Olevano Sul Tusciano. He married Eva Desio 7 Dec 1890. She was b. 19 Jan 1867 to Tommaso Desio (1813-1870) and his second wife Teresa LaPenta (1826-?).
Felice and Eva had five children in Italy, with four more in the United States after their immigrations in 1900 and 1902 respectively. I'll simply list the siblings & spouses for now:

(4)
  • Costantino Gustavo Desio(1891-1958) married in 1920 to Rose Bracalello of Kings, NY (1893-1974).
  • Anna Desio(1892-1893)
  • Anna Desio(1894-1956) married in 1913 to Vincenzo Zampino of Italy (1891-1967). They had 6 children.
  • Giacomo Desio (1895-1930) my great grandfather. He married Catherine Bazensky (later Barry) we BELIEVE maybe in secret. They had 2 children. My grandfather and his sister Eva Bettina.
  • Gioacchino Frances Desio(1899-1970) was the last of the siblings born in Italy. Married in 1930 to Cecilia Scicutella of New York (1913-1991). They had 2 daughters. Their eldest daughter Eva only recently passed away in 2024.
  • Alphonsus Vincent Desio (1904-1988) was the first of the siblings born in the United States in New York. Married in 1935 Lucille Mennella of New York (1913-1961)
  • Anthony John Desio(1905-1979) married in 1942 to Helen Josephine Shannon and had 2 children.
  • Concetta Desio(1907-1997) married in 1929 to Alfred Sacco of New York (1908-1960). They had one daughter, Marilyn Victoria (1938-2020) who had no children as far as I can tell.
  • Maria Desio(1909/10-1923)
My grandfather was born to Giacomo (bolded above) and Catherine:
(5 )Felix Warren Desio (1923-2008).

Italian women do not change their surname on marriage. They often assumed their husband’s surname in another country where this was common. The ship manifest will always always reflect their birth surname.
