Analogs

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

What are the closest analogs in English to "Don" and "Donna" as applied in 19th century Sicily?

Maybe "Sir"?

From Wikipedia:

"since the late modern period, Sir has been used as a respectful way to address a man of superior social status or military rank. Equivalent terms of address for women are Madam (shortened to Ma'am), in addition to social honorifics such as Mrs, Ms, or Miss.since the late modern period, Sir has been used as a respectful way to address a man of superior social status or military rank.
