Provenzano, Corleon Sicily

Post by KorB »

I am trying to find out more information about my great grandfather to find out how he was naturalized.

I've always been told by my parents that he told them he came over on a boat from Corleon Sicily as a teen, when I look at a 1930 census on Ancestry it shows that he was born here in the US, but he was nearly 40 when he filled it out. One thing I noticed is that it seems his mother also came over with him and it lists her as a V meaning a foreigner, I do not know the name of his father or where to begin research/find out if he naturalized before my grandmother was born.I am not even sure if his father came to the US with him, the census would seem to suggest he did not.

His name in the census is listed as Ben Provenzano, his home is listed as Harris Texas. I think his name is originally Benedito Provenzano. Some of his other relatives came to Bryan Texas.

I am very curious to find out if he kept his italian citizenship. Any help would be appreciated!

Right now I am looking at the 1910 census. Does it show that Matt Provenzano becomes a naturalized citizen? I'm new to doing this type of research, but it looks like it says 1901 PA. For another Immigrant it says NA

Is there a difference?

1910 is showing Matt came in 1901 and that his 1st papers for naturalization has been filed.

Thanks!

Does that mean that Italian citizenship was not passed on to Ben? Or that he just filed an intent to become a citizen?

I'm not sure but if Dad became a citizen while Ben was still a minor I believe it would apply to him as well.

I would contact member mler...he's pretty good with answering citizenship questions.

Naturalization records will be at the local level prior to 1906, and after that date you can request a search at this link:

http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/aboutus/h ... NATREC.htm

http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/g-639.htm

This taken from the Nara site should answer your questions on minors and naturalizations.........

The first major exception was that "derivative" citizenship was granted to wives and minor children of naturalized men. From 1790 to 1922, wives of naturalized men automatically became citizens. This also meant that an alien woman who married a U.S. citizen automatically became a citizen. (Conversely, an American woman who married an alien lost her U.S. citizenship, even if she never left the United States.) From 1790 to 1940, children under the age of 21 automatically became naturalized citizens upon the naturalization of their father. Unfortunately, however, names and biographical information about wives and children are rarely included in declarations or petitions filed before September 1906.
