Wondering about any finer points as to the translation of this one. Is the record on the lower part of this page...

Looks like this is the gist:

17 Month of November, Civil registrar of the Verciano section, statement made by Pasquino fu Bernardo Massoni, residing in San Vincenzo, Verciano, place known as Cantieri, age 48, and Domenico fu Giambattista Giusti, residing in the same place, tailor, age 40, declare that Domenico died at 3 o'clock in his home and immediately transported the body of Domenico and upon arriving at the home found a corpse which declarants identified as Domenico Cantieri, farmer, age 84, and to be son of Giuseppe Cantieri... spouse is Anna Maria Biagi?

I'm quite sure that's not completely correct...

Hi Mark

You've definitely got the gist of it. I think it is a really hard read especially with some of the words disappearing into the gutter, and you've done really well translating it. The only obvious question mark I have is the surname of Domenico Cantieri's wife. I am reading Biaga'. I'll reread the Italian later as it seems a little bit ambiguous in places.

Thanks, Angela. Am also curious about the “place known as Cantieri” reference. Do you think this was simply a reference to what amounts to a (generic) address? Or maybe is as to a larger locale?

I had the same questionmark.

My understanding is that Cantieri was one of four districts and that San Vincenzo was also a district, so it is a little bit ambiguous. “... San Vincenzo a Verciano, luogo detto a Cantieri...”

Hi, Angela-

Interesting reading - especially the link from Pippo on Dec 24, 2024. It's a bummer that the "Cantieri Nord" zone of the village appears to no longer have a church. Would like to know more about that...

The link stated that the village was traditionally divided into four zones—Cantieri Nord, San Vincenzo, Santo Stefano, and Vergalloro—and was home to four churches. One of them being the Oratory of San Lorenzo in the Cantieri area... but it says it was likely a private chapel, now completely lost! Argh!!!

I wonder what happened???

When we were in Italy in 2015 and 2023, I distinctly remember driving thru the Verciano area (and "glancing" at the cemetery up the road there) to get to nearby Badia di Cantignano. The above-ground water canal truly was such a cool thing to see (and drive under, etc.). Yet another amazing engineering feat for the day, for sure.

As always, happy to help, Mark. I’m pleased you found the link interesting, and yes often the more we learn about our history, the more we need to research. Maybe another trip to that area some time and you could take a closer look at the cemetery, just in case.
