Manerchia (or Manerchia-Mesara)

Post by bobb »

We are seeking information about our famiy. We believe that they were from the town of Capizzi in Sicily. We think the family name while in Capizzi was Manerchia-Mesara. Since our family name in the USA was Manerchia, we assume that the family shortened the name after they emigrated to the USA. First names would include Giacomo Manerchia, Giovanni Manerchia. We are not sure of the exact spelling of the names.

There was a Paolina Curcio who married Giacomo Manerchia Mesara.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Dear VJ,
Thank you for the reply to my inquiry. My maiden name was Pauline Manerchia and I am looking for any information on my family.
I am told they were from Capizzi in Sicily.
My grandfather, Giacomo Manerchia ( born about 1873 )and grandmother, Paolina Curcio (born about 1878 ) came to America with 2 children, Catherine ( born about 1902) and Angelo (born about (1906. They had several more children all born in Pennsylvania.
John born about 1911
Tony born about 1914
Nicola (my father) born 1916
Joseph born about 1917
Frank born about 1919
Louis born about 1920
Vincent born about 1921
They lived in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania
All are now deceased.
I am now told my great Grandfather was Giovanni Manerchia Maserra. I do not even know if this is the correct spelling as I just found out about the
Massera part of the name which was dropped in America.
Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for responding to my inquiry.
Pauline

Hi Again,

Here is the manifest for "Paolina". Her name was Francesca Paola Curcio. per this manifest, Francesca Paola Curcio was Naturalized July 13, 1942. Naturalization Numbers per the manifest are 3-233313. She was going to go see her husband, Giacomo in Philadelphia. She left her father, Angelo Curcio in Castrogiovanni. They were born in Gastrogiovanni.

Now the Family History Center has microfilm for the town of Castrogiovanni. The films cost $5.75 a roll. On the films you can find copies of the birth, marriage, and death records of your ancestors. Here is the link for the films.

Also, please note that Castrogiovanni is now called Enna since 1927.

In regard to the Manerchia Family from Marcus Hook, PA;
My Great Grandmother Giuseppa Maria (Manerchia) Giunta (1877-1966) immigrated from Capizzi Sicily in 1911. She lived in Marcus Hook as well into the 1960's. Giuseppa's son John Junto told me on many occasions that Angelo was his cousin. Please don't hesitate to contact me for any confirmation regarding this family connection.

Hello,
I am trying to determine if my family with the surname of Manerchia from Marcus Hook is related to the one in the discussion. My great grandparents were Frances (Frank) and Francesca Manerchia (Notaro) they lived one street over from the Manerchia's in this discussion according the the Census data and were also from Sicily. Can anyone help me make the connection between the families (if there is one)?
Thanks!
-Mike
