I'm looking over some civil birth records from Salemi, Trapani, Sicily and have come across a birth record that lists a man's occupation as "Cargese". I cannot seem to find a translation for this word.
The record says: "Cargese domiciliato in Salemi...."
A record from 2 years later shows this man's (Giuseppe Caruso) occupation as "contadino" which I understand means "peasant".
Does anyone know what "Cargese" might mean?
Thanks.
Chris
what does cargese mean?
Re: what does cargese mean?
"cargese" don't exist in Italy as profession, but it could be no a profession, but it could to indicate the place of origin... mistaken obviously... it could be "gaggese" (born in Gaggi town), " caprese" (born in Capri Leone town), "cefalese" (born in Cefalù) etc... or also it could be that the reading of word is mistaken... you can send a picture of this "cargese"? however is only a my suggestion... regards, suanj

Hi Chris, yes it is wrote Cargese, and what i can understand that this a particular verbal shape of porter profession; in fact "cargo" italian, is also a ancient word mean load, and cargese could be means load porter... this is the italian dictionary on line and you can look that italian "cargo" ( cargese = who job with loads) is a no most used word for to say "carico" =load... regards, suanj
