Need help finding info. on Guiseppe Insarda

Post by Poipuo4 »

Can someone tell me what I should do next in my search? I am looking for Guiseppe Insarda. His Americanized name would be Joseph Insardi. All I have is his Ellis Island records:
First Name: Guiseppe
Last Name: Insarda
Ethnicity: Italian, South Italian
Last Place of Residence: Feroleto
Date of Arrival: Nov 11, 1903
Age at Arrival: 19y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Cataluna
Port of Departure: Genova
Manifest Line Number: 0029

In 1911, his wife, Teresa Ventura Insarda died in NY City on Kenmare Ave. I have her death certificate. She was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave. According to family lure, his three girls, went to Catholic nuns to be raised and his son went to the NY Foundling Hospital. The children were Dorothy (not sure the Italian version), Stella, Maria Maddelena, Guiseppe Nicola. There is a story that he left America and returned to Italy and died there at a very young age, but we have no proof that he left America. I wrote to the NY archives for a birth certificate of one of the children, whose name, birth date and birth location I am sure of, but they had no record. I have been waiting several months to get a baptisimal certificate of one of the children from the Old St. Patrick's Cathedral to see if there is any info. on her parents, Guiseppe and Teresa. I also have an order for a search of marriage certificates in NY for Guiseppe and Teresa. If there is a marriage certificate it would be between 1903 and 1906 based on the birth dates of the children. Where should I look next?

Thank you. Yes, that was their son. Do you have any recommendations what information I should be looking for next? Is there census info. or should I now turn to Italian records?

Oh, gosh! I think that is it! Her death certificate says Teresina Ventura. Plus, I know from her Ellis Island papers that her first destination was Brooklyn. That is Kings County, right? I already have an order, searching 1903-1906 in the archives, so I am hoping that will include the certificate. Thanks so much.

I don't have any census info. yet, but I am thinking that 1910 would be the relevant year, considering that Teresina died in 1911 and Guiseppe was never heard from again with the next year or two.

Thank you!

Yes, VJ. That is them. However, this is odd. Ellis Island has two entries with that info. (including the brother Carmelo and uncle Domenico). First Name: Teresa
Last Name: Ventura
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian South
Last Place of Residence: Laureana di B.
Date of Arrival: Nov 09, 1903
Age at Arrival: 28y Gender: F Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Sicilian Prince
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0022

Then there is the entry that you found under Teresina. When I click on the original manifest though under the Teresina entry, it does not seem to match the info.

I have the actual hard copy of the manifest that lists her arrival on 11/09/03 on archival, nice paper. (Did that ship not sail? I see you have a notation "did not sail"?) I know it is the right Teresa because of the uncle Domenico. I am not sure why the info. comes up under two different dates of arrival. These have got to be the same people because of the same name of the brother and same name of the uncle. Hmmmm....

What is fascinating is that already in about half an hour I know more about Guiseppe and Teresa than their children knew their entire lives about them (due to their being orphaned at an early age).

I appreciate all of your help!

Thank you, JCSM. I think I have to cry a little now. I can't believe you found that. That is most definitely them! That really means a lot to me. Teresina died the next year at about 27 years old of t.b. IMHO very tragic to die under 30 and leave 4 children and to never live out "The American Dream." I think that census was the last snapshot of them as a family.

Giuseppe and Teresina (Teresa diminutive), and Alfonsa, Maddalena, Stella and Nicola... Dorotea ( all first names in italian spell) born after 1910... sure... now we must find Giuseppe... if he back in Italy, perhaps in Feroleto, and the death record it must be in Feroleto.... kisses, suanj

Thank you everyone! I just got back to the computer this morning. I am amazed with everything you have discovered. I found out that Dorothy's birth name was Alphonsa and that she changed it to Americanize it, so you did find the correct family. Also, that is the correct person (Nick) you found in the 1920 and 1930 census. Nick did work in radio and was in an orphanage as a child. This is amazing that he was in an orphanage in Brooklyn. The girls and Nick were separated when Teresina died and lost each other. They were reunited about 30 yrs. later when they heard Nick on the radio. Now it turns out that Nick was in Brooklyn at the same time I know that Alphonsa was in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, they did not know they were living in the same city at the time!

Grazie mille for all of your kind work on this. I can not thank you enough! My family is thrilled with these discoveries!
