Lost in PA
Lost in PA
I am trying to research my paternal ancestry. It has been difficult. The Italian name is Muoio. This is as much as I know at the present. Domenico Muoio b 15 mar 1880 Cerisano, Cosenza, Italy. Had three brothers, all immigrated to the US at the same time, not sure of the year, or name of the brothers. Domenico married Rosina Ruffalo I believe it to be ~1910. They were married in Cerisano. They had the following children. Susan b 04 sep 1916, Frank b 14 Jan 1918 (my grandfather), Fred b 10 Jan 1920, Alvera b 28 sep 1921, Julia b 1923, James b 1925. Domenico died 28 Dec 1959. Rosina died 09 Apr 1953.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Lost in PA
Mark,
As you can see, we're all eager to help but I think its also fair to tell you how we were able to locate info so that can proceed for other members of your families. Sometimes we forget to do that.
To locate ship manifests, some helpful sites are..
www.ellisisland.org or the one I prefer, www.stevemorse.org. Both are free sites, you just need to register a name and password and you can view ship manifests up to 1924. There are several different search forms and options. Go through it and play with the options until you get the desired results. Sometimes its good to remember not to include full first or last names since many names are transcribed incorrectly. Also, for women, don't forget to look under maiden (most common) and married surnames. It could be under either.
For locating census up to 1930, ship manifests up to 1957, WW1 and WW2 records, etc, www.ancestry.com. It is a subscription site but should be available through your local library or through a Family History Center for free. Just call ahead and book an appointment to use a computer unless you want to subscribe yourself.
www.familysearch.org is a great site for several different reasons. Free so go through the site and have fun. You never know what you might find.
http://www.paginebianche.it/index.html for looking up possible living relatives still residing in Italy.
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp for form letters to write away for info to Italy or to obtain records.
Hope some of this info helps a bit.

Re: Lost in PA
Valarie,
I found no likelys using the Steve Morse search form and went to Ancestry and decided to check the Philadelphia manifests first. Typed in Muoio and it was there. I read the years as 1899-1912. So, there's another manifest and another census record.
Edited second time to correct Domenico De Cicco's town--The passenger below, Domenico De Cicco from Mendocino, about a mile southeast of Cerisano is, also going to Washington and also states in US previously in Washington PA 1899-1912. Perhaps they traveled together the first time.

Hi Mark,
First I want to say, great find to Valarie, Biff, and Nuccia!!!!
Now to Mark, you can do the research yourself for the Family History Center does have microfilm for the town of Cerisano. Most of the records are in decent shape, some films are a little hard to read. The films cost $5.75 a roll. On the films you can find copies, of the birth, marriage and death records of your ancestors.
Here is the link the film numbers from the Family History Center.

Here is the official web site of the town.

Also I had done research for a gentleman many years ago whose ancestors were Muto and had Muoio in the family. I only have two documents to share.
Domenico Muoio
Born: March 12, 1828
born on Via Santo Lorenzo
Birth Act #9
Father: Raffaele Muoio, age 28, land owner
Mother: Giulia Scinti
Saveria Muoio
Born: November 28, 1857
born on Via Piano Longo
Birth Act #71
Father: Domenico Muoio, age 40, laborer
Mother: Serafina Molinaro
I hope some of this helps.

Re: Lost in PA
I located the 1910 census record for 120 Woodland St, and there was nothing resembling a Domenico Muoio at that address. Did find a boarder Dominick Meneo down the street on Woodland but the age and year of immigration are incorrect.

Re: Lost in PA
Mark,
If you'd like to take a look at some interior shots of where your great grandfather worked to support his family and get a feel for the working conditions, there are a number of photos from 1941 showing the employees of the Washington Tin Plate Company at work. They're availble to view at the Library of Congress. When the page below opens search for Washington Tinplate (no space between tin and plate). A new page will open with links to the 34 pictures.
