'Dimita' (cognome) in Santeramo in Colle, Provincia di Bari

Help! Can't seem to get much further with my research as far as this family name goes. My nonno, Salvatore, wasborn in 1885 or so, and I have his parents' names, but no birth dates for them! Raffaele Dimita and Maria Francesca Fraccalvieri. He was one of 9, know all I need but to go backwards, I just need a hand since he was the only one of 9 to come to California and all the Dimita remained in the mid west. When they immigrated, they changed the spelling in the US to De Mita. THIS IS WRONG...so if that is your last name we a re probably related since the true spelling is Dimita. Also, coming from Santeramo in Colle as in many small towns, these names are from there. Also, intersted parties may inquire regarding Family from Santeramo, my family last names are Dimita, Caponio, Tritto, Maffei, Fraccalvieri, Racano, Luparelli, Clemente & Labarile. Have lots of info on in laws as well...Caponio, Scattaglia, Giove, Paradiso, Cacciapaglia, etc. Love to hear from you escpecially if anyone has a few answers for me on My Question!

Moreover Salvatore Dimita it had to be been born in year 1890 just. It was old of 17, in year 1907 when it has left with to Domenico Labarile, Erasmo Giove and Domenico Carone (..?) from Santeramo...In the successive travel of return from Italy, in 1913 it was old of 23 and it travelled with to two sisters: Rosamaria(18 old) and Anna (17 old).
Moreover from casual reading passenger's list , in year 1909, a Francesco Dimita (misspelled Dinita on ellis island) with 2 persons Francesco Maffei and Gaetano Maffei from Santeramo in colle, that they go from a Salvatore DIMITA..perhaps can interest..
Task that Salvatore Dimita is been born really in 1890.
In 1919 a Raffaele Dimita (55 old-been born in 1864..) it arrives in USA with 4 sons: Caterina, Michele, Giuseppe and Doroteo and go from its son Francesco Dimita...
on the same ship it travels also Maria Fraccalvieri that arrives in USA in 1919, age 51 (been born in 1868) in order to o from the two sons Francesco and Salvatore...

With all the information you don't say whether your granfathers parents came to the USA with him or remained in Italy? You also don';t say if you can read and write Italian and you don't say that there are relatives in Italy who cannot assist you. so if you can answer those questions you make lifew a lot easier for people who would like to help you more precisely instead of giving you places and things to wirte or read instead of research. Have you gon to the Family Hisotry Library of the Mormon church??? If you go to there you can look up your entire family in Santeramo in Colle commencing in 1809. I will give you the exact range of dates available to you on micorfilm which you can obtain at the library. Peter

The records in santeramo in Colle go back to 1809 to 1900 and if your obtain the book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson you will be able to distinguish the lettering of the civil records for the pre typewriter days. Ialso suggest if you bring a magnifying glass with you it is helpful when some lettering is not clear to the eye ...but your entire family is laid out before you. Peter

Go to the nearest Mormon church Family History Library. You can call them up and ask which is the easiest and simplest and order the microfilm ahead of time so you will have them there when you decide to research the microfilm. My grandmother was Maria Fraccalvieri and my other grandmother was Anna Fraccalvieri. My parents were 3rd cousins. Weird , I know. My grandparents were born in Santeramo also. My grandfather’s last names were Cagnazzi and Massaro also from Santeramo. I live in Garden Grove , Ca. I too am researching family history. The other surnames you mention are not in my family tree, but perhaps we r distant cousins. I had one of my cousins tell me that the Fraccalvieri name traced to Austria. Interesting but I can't confirm it. Most of the childten on my mom’s side were blondes,redheads and had blue and green eyes. I was not fortunate enough to inherit that. My mom was and her mom. Please let me know if you have found anymore info on the family name.
