Marriage Records

Post by JoeT »

Hello,

I am currently looking for my great-grandparents' marriage record for dual-citizenship, but I am having some difficulty. Family history records that they were married in Pittsburgh, but the family has been proven wrong on at least one occasion. Searches of the Italian-Catholic dioceses of Pittsburgh from 1903-1910 and a search of county records were all conducted, but nothing turned up. As my great-grandparents did live in Philadelphia, it is quite possible that they were married there. Both were from Italy, but I do not think it was likely that they were married there, as they did not come to the country at the same time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much,

Joe

Joe,

If they were married in Italy, it is highly possible that your great grandfather came to the states first to earn some money and locate a place to live before sending for your great grandmother. Do you know the town(s) where they were born? If they were both from the same town, both their integral birth acts should contain a notation referencing their marriage.

Have you located their ship manifests and/or naturalization records?

Biff,

My great-grandparents were both from the same town, Orsara di Puglia in the province of Foggia. I have located the manifest for my great-grandfather, as well as his birth certificate. I don't have my great-grandmother's birth certificate or her manifest. I know that she would have only been about fourteen when my great-grandfather arrived in this country. I also have a letter of non-existence of a record of U.S. Immigration certifying that my great-grandfather never became a U.S. citizen.

Thanks very much for you help.

Hi Joe,

Can you tell me when you think your great grandparents would have been married in Philadelphia?

Also can you tell me their names?

Next week I can look at the Marriage Indexes for Philadelphia for the years of 1885 - 1915.

Trish,

Their names were Liberatore Tumolo and Mary Acquaviva. Liberatore had an alternate spelling of Liberato and it is possible that Tumolo may have an extra "m".

As for the years, they would have been married some time between 1903 and 1910.

Thank you so much for your help, and if there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know.

Thanks again,
Joe

This manifest has Maria (Mary) coming with her father Rocco to Philadelphia to a cousin. Her age is 22.

I don't know if it's of any help or not. Maybe the cousin's name will look familiar if it's who you're looking for.

Joe and Elizabeth,

If that's the correct manifest, it shows Maria's marital status as married.

Yes, I saw that too Biff, but since Joe is having trouble locating a marriage certificate for his great grandparents in the US I thought this might be a possibility - year of travel and age seemed like it might fit (thought Joe or a family member might recognize the cousins name).

Joe maybe you can post your great grandfathers manifest so we can see dates of travel, his age etc.

For some reason, I am having trouble getting the manifest to come up on the internet, but I have a copy of it here.

It is dated January 28, 1903 and has my great-grandfather's final deestination listed as Philadelphia. I know from his birth certificate that he was born November 5, 1884.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi Joe,

I looked in the Philadelphia Marriage Index for Libertore but did not find him.

I checked: Tumolo, Tummolo, Turrolo, To..., Ta... Te.... I tried "Z", "L", "I", and even ""J". Nothing! I even tried her name of Acquaviva. Still Nothing!

However, I do have some information for you for other people. They could be related.

Name - Spouse's Name - Marriage Year

Anna Tummolo - Casanto - 1909

Anna Tumolo - Lombardo - 1914
Antoniette Tumolo - Cimino - 1914
Antonio Tumolo - Curci - 1897
Donato Tumolo - Latrecchi - 1915
Giuseppe Tumolo - Licchetti - 1909
Louis Tumolo - Amato - 1914
Luigi Tumolo - Largomarsino - 1906
Pasquale Tumolo - Toomey -1911
Raffaele - Catalano - 1902
Saverio Tumolo - Gilbert - 1908
Vincenzo Tumolo - DiBona - 1910

Frank Acquaviva - Iafolla -1911
Giovannina Acquaviva - Bianco -1907
Giuseppe Acquaviva - Sarrecchi - 1913

Vincenza Aquaviva - Durante 1890

I hope some of these names help!

Trish,

I can't thank you enough for your help! I am going to check those names with my family and see what they think. If they don't ring any bells with anyone, I may write to Italy and see what the commune has to say.

Thank you very much!
