Family of Giovanni Mercuri from Montefalcone Apennino

Post by Topper »

Giovanni was born in the commune of Montefalcone Apennino in Marche on June 16, 1893. His father's name was Natale and he had sisters. It appears that their last place of permanent residence was Amandola.

Have you sent for any documentation of records in Italy?
Do you know the names of his parents? Any reference to them on his manifest?

There are three listed in the draft registration, however, only one matches the birthyear:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

Name: Giovanni Mercuri
City: Not Stated
County: Beaver
State: Pennsylvania
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 16 Jun 1893
Race: Caucasian (White)
Roll: 1852811
DraftBoard: 1

Is this possibly your Giovanni?

Ciao!

From the arrival manifest he was leaving in Italy-Amandola his father Natale and was going to his brother Giuseppe Mercuri in Greensburg PA...
Maybe someone can give a look to the 1920/1930 census for Pennsylvania - Westmoreland county ( ... my subscription has expired...I can't....)
This can be a beginning...

If he in fact stayed in PA, this is a possible record:

1930 United States Federal Census

Name: John Mercuri
Home in 1930: Ellwood City, Lawrence, Pennsylvania
Age: 37
Estimated birth year: abt 1893
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Etoilia
Race: White

Household Members: Name Age
John Mercuri 37
Etoilia Mercuri 27
Romeis Mercuri 6
James Mercuri 3 9/12
Jennie Mercuri 2 8/12

There is also a Guiseppe/Joseph....but need further facts to establish him as the brother to Giovanni/John.......both are also listed in the WW2 draft registration.

wldspirit can you check the manifest. It says Giovanni leaving his father Natale but on page 2 it says going to Domenico and it might be Mercuri and I can't make out the relationship. Let me know what you think. May have already been a relative here he was hooking up with.

I can make out the name Domenico, but can't be sure if the surname is Mercuri, or the relationship stated....off to the side, it clearly states brother
Guiseppe Mercuri......also note line one, this person is also joining friend
Guiseppe Mercuri.....need another set of eyes, mine are terrible..... :P

It appears that the initial entry with the Domenico name was crossed out and that the correct entry is brother Giuseppe Mercuri.

Thanks wldspirit and Biff. Reason I had asked, I found another manifest with a Giuseppe coming earlier than 1913 and several other Mercuri's were with him, place they were going said brother-in-law in Pittsburg PA, the last name looked like the last name of Domenico on this manifest.

Just wanted to check so I wouldn't muddle the thread with incorrect info.

Biff - can you pull a 1910 and 1920 census for the address listed in Greensburg? Since Topper is looking for any brothers or sisters that Giovanni might have had, this might be important information.

What do you think? (I have no subscriptions, I'm unable to pull census).

Morning, Elizabeth. It appears that Ancestry is temporarily down. I'll check later for the census records. Can you make out the actual address? It looks like 314 Madison St to me.

Hi Biff

Yes, looks like 314 Madison St. to me too. Laura posted the name of the county as Westmoreland earlier for Greensburg PA.

I'll be anxious to see what you find out.

Thanks

Elizabeth and Laura,

I've had no luck finding any Mercuri's in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Greensburg. Think we need some feedback from Topper on the WWI Draft reg card and 1930 census posted by wldspirit before proceeding further.

Best,
Biff

Thank you all for the effort you are making in my behalf. Giovanni/John Mercuri was my father-in-law. I asked his children about his family. They said he never spoke about his family or where he came from in Italy other than the fact he came from the province of Marche. So I have had no information about his parents.
Yes that is John listed for the WWII draft. His oldest son said he did go to Greensburg when he came to this country. He doesnt know why or where or with whom he stayed. If he dad family here, he never talked about them.
Yes that too is Giovanni/John in the 1930 census. He resided in Ellwood City, Pa. His wife Italia and the first 3 of his 4 children were listed in that census.
I do have a copy of his Certificate of Citizenship approved on September 10, 1930. The certificate number is 3285314 and the petition number is 89141. Again let me thank all of you for your effort....Topper

1930 census
1942 WWII Draft Registration Card
(note: page 2 is incorrect)

- Town on WWI Card could be Montefalcone Appennino?
- in 1920, not at the same address as his 1930 census & WWII card
