'Dirattore di Machine'
This was listed as an occupation on a 1850 birth act
Would this be an important occupation? Have looked up lists of occupations but cant find it listed.
Another occupation which was listed as 'possidente' (property owner) had had 'Sign.' before his Christian name, would this have any special meaning?
Grateful for any suggestions
Emmy
Occupation??
Re: Occupation??
Sign. is just the abbreviation for Signore

Re: Occupation??
Direttore means director or manager so Direttore di Machine probably meant he was in charge of running some type of machine or in charge of a machine of some sort.

A 'Direttore di Macchine' is a chief engineer.

Re: Occupation??
Would that be for the railroad? What else could he be an engineer for in that time period?

Re: Occupation??
According to my dictionary, one meaning of "macchina" is printing press. "Il gionale va in macchina alle due del mattino" (The paper goes to press at 2 a.m.). It can also mean "machinery in general", as well as engine or apparatus. "Macchina a vapore" is "steam engine". Maybe he oversaw factory machinery or printing presses, or as has been suggested, he was a railroad engineer.

Re: Occupation??
Many thanks everyone for your help
I'll put it down as 'chief engineer' and that would cover all areas of work he may have been in.
Re the 'Sing.' - Signor I just wondered why out of all the records only he had been given this before his name. Wondered if he had been someone who had been of some importance since he was a property owner.
Thanks again

Re: Occupation??
It might have been put in as a title of respect because he had an important job.
Re: Occupation??
Even today it is quite usual to address a Director, a Police Chief or a Judge as 'Signor Direttore', 'Signor Maresciallo' or 'Signor Giudice'....
It is considered an act of courtesy and as such is usually expected!

Re: Occupation??
The Dirattore di Machine wasnt the one who had Sign. in front of his name it was the one who was the property owner so it seems he must have had an important position in the community.
