Domanico/Carolei - Consenza, Calabria
Domanico/Carolei - Consenza, Calabria
If possible, I would like to obtain the baptismal certificates for my maternal grandparents.
born: Giovanni Antonio REDA - b Jan. 25, 1876, Domanico
(parents: Gaetano & Maria Antonia Reda (nee Greco)
born: Filomena REDA - b Jan. 29, 1883 - Carolei
(parents: Antonio Maria & Innocenza REDA (nee Guarascio)
They were probably baptised as infants - most likely within a few weeks of birth. Because I do not know the size of Domanico & Carolei at the time of their births (nor today, as well! ) -- were they considered villages or towns -- perhaps, there was more than one local parish...
If anyone can provide me with assistance in locating these documents, it would be most appreciated.
Thank you.

Oh my -- thank you for such a quick response! Yes, it is very helpful information to receive.
So in Carolei - St. Lukes the Evangelist & St Peters
Domanico - St. John the Baptist
Could you explain what the number 87030 applies to? Also, the quote on the bottom of the post beginning "Cambiano...", what does that read in English. (The Church names were simple to translate!)
Regards,
Rita May

The numbers are the postal code/zip code....
as for the quote, the melody changes, but the words remain the same....

The players change but the melody (music) is always the same...wldspirit wrote:"Cambiano i suonatori ma la musica è sempre quella."

Dear Wldspirit & Livio,
Both translations sing like troubadors to my heart...I wished I had learned to speak Italian. When viewing an Italain or Spanish film, I usually become enrapt in the cadence of the speech and the musical resonance of the language (ingnoring all subtitles) -- sometimes, I even understand the words exchanged! So, thank you both for responding.
[Although, when I heard family members "discussing" something in Italian, their words had a different timbre quality in their voices... ]
Wldspirit -- Certainly, I should have recognized the number as a postal code!

My family didn't pass the language down to the younger generation...
But they certainly spoke it when they didn't want the "big ears" to know what they were discussing!!!!!!

Indeed! Of course, it was rather obvious, was it not, what they were usually discussing?

My father was born in Domanico and I have been there many times. If you are looking for documents the easiest is to rent the microfilms from your nearest Family History Library. Both Domanico and Carolei have been recorded.
We may be distantly connected as my maiden name is Sammarco but other names are Spina...Reda,,,Desanto.
I will be there again in June..
Any questions I would be happy to answer

Rita,
You may want to check the films before you try the church. i was very lucky -the film showed the birth certificate and there was a column on the right hand side which showed the baptismal record as well -- usually done the same or next day after the birth.
