OK Thanks folks! Who do I write to if I want to know about my grandfather's parents & siblings. My grandfather died in approx 1976, would they be able to give out information.

Dear Elvia Hope your well in OZ..now go to www,mangeruca.com and copy the form in Italian requesting a document (your case a death certificate) to establish his birthdate and then also request his long form (estratto di nascita) birth certificate which will give you his parents full names. Since you know the year of his death start from there. Once you have both documents then write another letter (same www.mangeruca.com website for form letter which you can alter by substituting the document requested with a family status certificate (Certificato di Stato di Famiglia) and knowing his fathers name and year of birth (taken from age in long form birth record) you can request the family status certificate which will show all members of his family, his siblings, all births,marriages and deaths in the family.

When sending in your request please send them about $5.00 OZ money for each document since overseas requests are free of charge and it is an end of day duty for poorly paid clerks. You can send either cash or postal coupons, your decision. Enclose a self addressed envelope with the money.

Dear Livio even I am happy that they found the website since I found the Listado de Comunas many years ago in my South America Collection and had to always write it in before I could bring it to the screen. Now I can access it with one click!!!

I am equally happy that you have learned a new word in English. Whenever I come across a new word in Italian or Spanish I feel satisfied that I have accomplished something.

Thanks Peter, I will give it a try, hopefully I will get an answer. I am not sure if I should give them cash I did hear that letters aren't always received in Italy due to people trying to check if money is in the envelope.

Dear Elvia sometimes it happens sometimes they send back your money with documents and hopefully they accept the money and comply with your request since foreign requests are free and clerks are poorly paid and do their researches at the end of day.It will take 6-8 weeks to receive the document(s) requested.
