Grandmother Venuti Search

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Grandmother Venuti Search

Post by jsddo »

I have been searching the Ellis Island database for information about my grandmother (Maria Rosa Venuti) who arrived at Ellis Island from Naples, Italy, on May 24, 1907. I have been unable to locate her in the Ellis Island database no matter how hard I try.

Perhaps if I knew the name of the ship on which she arrived, I can search the ship's manifest and find her listed. Can anyone tell me the name(s) of any ship(s) from Naples that arrived at Ellis Island on May 24, 1907?

Thank you so much for your help.

The ship is the SS Moltke which arrived 5/24/1907 which is the same ship that VJ pinpointed so adroitly making her listing the correct listing.=Peter=

Valarie and Peter:
Thank you for the information. However, once again the Ellis Island database is driving me crazy. When I do an "advanced search" using the information you provided, I still get no record for the person you mentioned (Maria Vennti). The only three "Maria Vennti's" who appear on the screen arrived in 1899, 1911, and 1911, respectively.

I am getting so frustrated with the Ellis Island database. What am I doing wrong???

Please help (again!).

BTW: my grandmother's birth date is 11/19/1881. She was from either the town of Stella Cilento or the town of San Giovanni, both in Southern Italy.

Thanks so much.

Joe,

Sorry, I wasn't more clear.
The first manifest was found on ancestry.com.
Knowing that you couldn't find it on Ellis, I looked for
another name on the same page found on ancestry.

After bringing up the transcription on Ellis under the other
name for the entire page, I found they had mis-transcribed
the name as Maria Yennti
(you should see this name on the top bar of the Ellis Island
page when you click on the link in the post above))

Joe,
You’re not doing anything wrong  .

You may want to try the one-step Gold Form for Ellis Island.
(if you’re not using it already)

There are quite a few search options - including no name at all,
this is especially helpful if you know the town & years.

Partial name searches
First initial name searches
Partial location searches
‘Sounds like’ searches
‘Contains’ searches

Lots of options & combinations you can try!

Another side-note: the letter ‘N’ inside a name is very often
transcribed as a ‘U’.

VALARIE: Grandmother Venuti Search Part 3

Valarie:
Thanks so much. You found her for me! I'm so pleased and grateful to you.

I've now found three of the six ancestors who came to the U.S. from Italy. I'm not sure I'll ever find the other three, considering how difficult the Ellis Island database is to work with. And I really can't afford a subscription to ancestry.com (I'm retired on a fixed income).

Thanks again for your help! You are my hero!

Joe: if you have a good local public library system, they may have a subscription to Ancestry.com. Give them a call and ask.

Ancestry.com also has an option where you can subscribe for just one month, or at least they used to...

Thanks for your offer to continue helping. I'm now searching for the following four ancestors:

1. Rosalia Venuti (nee Zammarelli), wife of Giuseppe Venuti. Giuseppe arrived at Ellis Island on the SS Bulgaria, May 20, 1909. According to the ship's manifest, Rosalia was left behind, probably in Stella Cilento, Italy. Rosalia must have made a subsequent voyage to the U.S. since she died in Philadelphia, PA, on August 17, 1922.

2. Maria Gracia Giordano (nee Esposito), wife of Angelo Maria Giordano. Both she and her husband were born in Campania province in a town whose name begins with the word “Vallo.â€

Joe,
If this is the correct census,
1920 census
Rosalia was born abt 1855, immig abt the same time as Giuseppe?
Thanks!

Yes, I just realized I have birth dates for Angelo Di Gregorio (March 25, 1866) and Theresa Giordano Di Gregorio (December 25, 1882). Sorry I forgot to include these. These are the only two birth dates I have among the four people.
