Surname, Colle
Surname, Colle
Hi, I am looking for any information on my Grandfather.
His name was Francesco Colle, He was born Aug. 22, 1893, he was from Arzano, Napoli, Italy.
His (and my family's) name was some way changed to Collo.
The problem is He was an orphan, or grew up in an orphanage. I belive the orphanage he grew up in was burned down or had a fire? He did live with a family when he was a boy but they did not give him their name.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank You
Marc

Re: Surname, Colle
Yes that is him. I have pulled Ellis Island info up before but never that much detail. Thank you.
The fact that his US contact was his adopted father, Gallapo, and his destination was Port Richmond in Staten Island, NY ( where he lived his whole life in US) Confirms that this is him.
I am trying to find out if Colle was his birth name or one given to him by the orphanage. Thank you again.
Do you know what those notations are, from the 1930s it seems, on his line?

Re: Surname, Colle
Did you note that he left his mother Maria Rosa in Italy? There was no last name given which leads one to believe that it was Colle. Or was she Gallapo's wife ?
Notations have to do with naturalization. Here is a site that helps explain.

Re: Surname, Colle
Yes I did note his mother's name, I am not sure if that was his adopted mother or not. Up until now I only knew the last name of the family that took him in.
Once again, Thank You.

Re: Surname, Colle
Someone here should be able to help with census records, That will give you a better idea of what other family there was. I believe when I checked there was only one Colle and one Gallapo manifest. Draft cards and naturalization info will give you info also. I don't know if Port Richmond is part of NYC or not, but if it is here is a good site

Re: Surname, Colle
You guys are good, thanks again.
Port Richmond is part of Staten Island, NYC. That is where my father was from.
The draft card shows my Grandmother as notification.
Just FYI we can't always blame the guy at Ellis Island for changing our names. You can see the name Colle on official US records, but somehow along the way it was changed to Collo. I think my Uncle just started spelling it that way because thats how people said the name?
Is there any way to access Italian Records? Church Records?

Re: Surname, Colle
Thanks, Riccardo.
In checking Francesco's manifest, it shows his last residence as Arzano but his birthplace as Napoli. If he was born in the town of Napoli rather than the province of Napoli, longhntr will need to write there for his birth record rather than to Arzano.

Many thanks to all.
Biff, Sbarra was my grandmothers maiden name ,those are all related.
Funny how her name is listed as Camile, Carmella and Amelia.
