morale..morelli?

Post by vanessamorale »

i need so much help! i'm a junior in college, just now trying to find out my heritage. i know for a fact i'm italian. my name name is morale and i'm from Vermont (USA). I know my fathers grandfather immigrated here from Sicily. My last name is Morale (often times pronounced with the 'e' on the end)...could it have originally been Morelli? I know my grandfathers name was Ralph Frank Morale, and his fathers name was Something Morale and he married a Piscalini. Any one have any suggestions on where to begin. I know they immigrated by ship to White River Junction Vermont.

1930 Census - Morale Family - Line 40 - White River Junction Village

Ralph is less than 1 years old... Hard to really see the parents names clearly... It was transcribed as such:

Name Age

Patsy Manale 87 (I think should be 37, not 87 - surname could be Morale)
immigrated 1912

Lena Manale 36
immigrated 1922

Antonette Manale 6
Rose Manale 4
Johnie Manale 2
Ralph Manale 2/12

Vanessa,

possibly your great grandfather's surname was mispelled from Molare to Morale... I think this could be his arrival in 1912:

Boston Passenger Lists, 1820-1943
about Pasquale Molare
Name: Pasquale Molare
Arrival Date: 9 Jul 1912
Age: 20 Years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1892
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Canopic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Guiseppe
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Paoline, Italy (Paolisi  )
Microfilm Roll Number: 180

Leaving in Italy his father Giuseppe in Paolisi and joining his brother Giuseppe in Burlington? VT..

Hmmm... him and wife Pasqualina (Lina on 1930 census?) coming back from Italy... this was the reason he needed the passport... It states he was naturalized in Waterbury, VT - 11/19/1920... I wonder if he went back to get married?

Hi Mike!
I think you're right because in the census Pasqualina/Lena declared her first arrival in 1922... so possibly he came back to Italy just to marry!

Vanessa, you mentioned Ralph's mother being a "Piscalini".... I was first assuming that was a surname.... but I'm now thinking it was her given name (Pasqualina).. would that be a good assumption?

I think you are right, Mike, because Piscalini does not seem to be an Italian surname. :D

Next steps? You could order Ralph's birth certificate:

Call here for info:
Hartford Vital Records ( Windsor Co.)Hartford Town Clerk
171 Bridge Street
White River Jct., VT 05001
(802) 295-2785

Or you could expedite order online at www.vitalchek.com ($16, includes shipping) From the SS Death Index and Vermont Death Index (see below), I believe he was born on February 15th, 1930...

Vermont Death Index, 1981-2001
Given, Middle Name, Surname: Ralph F Morale
Birth Date: 15 Feb 1930
Death Date: 27 Feb 1983
Place of Death: Hartford, VT
Age: 53

Social Security Death Index
Name: Ralph F. Morale
SSN: xxx-xx-8579
Last Residence: 03743 Claremont, Sullivan, New Hampshire, United States of America
Born: 15 Feb 1930
Died: 27 Feb 1983
State (Year) SSN issued: Vermont (Before 1951 )

Same process for death certificate.... obituaries are always a good source for secondary proof... Do you know when Pasqualina died? Her death certificate or obituary may have her maiden name....

I'm fairly confident pink and I are on the right trail... so I would go and order Pasquale's birth certificate as well... I'm sure someone on the board can give you the address or email for that locale...

I believe one of the records given also shows Pasquale working for the Railroad... so this site might be worthy:

http://www.rrb.gov/mep/genealogy.asp

As you can see, the collective "we" can work with the smallest of details and expand it to find the story... but it's best if you interview any and all living relatives... Organize yourself, start with a folder for each surname...

Cheers,
Mike

Pasquale doesn't seem to be listed on this site... but you may want to reach out to them to see what information is available.... his WWII registration (around 1941) says he was working for the Boston & Maine RR
