medieval venetian records
medieval venetian records
I'm trying to research the family 'Quartano' who left Venice in around 1450 to live in Corfu. The Corfu history is well documented, but there is nothing about the Venetian branch. Does anyone know how I can begin to find out about this?
I am a rank beginner at genealogy, but am a musicologist so am familiar with some techniques and speak a little Italian (though not earlier than the Cinquecento). Any suggestions very gratefully received!

May I suggest you write for a catalkogue from the anitquarian book dealer ARNALDO FORNI EDITORE, e-mail info@fornieditore.com. The only reference to Europe is Quartanoi as part of Balkans genealogy in the google website. Your inquiry requires an in depth history research of venice to uncover Quartano in Venice. Peter
This is very true, and I am only just beginning. Do you know how far back the Archivio del Stato in Venice goes, by any chance?ptimber wrote:<snip useful suggestion> Your inquiry requires an in depth history research of venice to uncover Quartano in Venice. Peter
Another oddity - putting 'quartano venice' into Google brings up a reference to a "Grand Hotel Il Quartano di Abbazia in Venice", where the Murano glass artist Fulvio Bianconi once worked. I doubt however that this has anything to do with the present-day Hotel Abbazia (next to the train station), which was a Carmelite convent. It may refer to Abbazia (today Opatija) in Istria, where there were and are several very Grand Hotels. It's possible that the family had connections there.
Thank you anyway. Any more suggestions?

Thank you.suanj wrote:ancient families in Venice http://www.geocities.com/families_histo ... eziane.htm
Alas, the Quartano are not here as far as I can see... I shall keep looking.
I told you about the anitquarfian bookstore in Bologna and I referred you to their catalogue and I also made mention of Balkan genealogy but you chose to talk about Murano glass and nothing else. I question your motives in reflecting Murano to my referring you to the Google website in its entirety. I do not know what your problem is but I bet it is difficult to pronounce. Peter
Good heavens, I'm sorry if I've offended you.... it will take time to deal with antiquarian booksellers and I haven't actually got the kind of money that most antiquaries these days demand. The Forni site has a huge amount of fascinating stuff (I know it well from my musical and theatrical studies), but I can't afford to buy books unless I'm absolutely sure that they've got information I can't get otherwise.ptimber wrote:......however in the interests of amity, civil records for Venezia go back from 1871 to 1931. I know about the Balkan genealogies, of course - they are the first thing one turns up on google - but as I said, the Corfiot end is very well documented, back to about 1450, and it's before that, and especially in Venice and its dominions, that I am looking. Googling on "quartano venice", I found a site referring to a Murano glassblower who had worked in a Hotel "Il Quartano" in Abbazia, which I take to be the Istrian town, also a Venetian colony in the fifteenth century. I'm sorry if this offends you, I'm not sure what's wrong about it, but am always willing to be instructed.
To follow your second point up, alas again, 1871 is far too late, I need pre-1450 records. Perhaps there are medieval parochial records still extant?
Thank you for looking. I have gone to the Forni site but am not clear what is on it that can help - there is a great deal of stuff that interests me enormously on early music and theatre, but no genealogy. The section on local history 'Tre Venezie' covers only music and numismatics. Am I missing something?ptimber wrote:The earliest record is in Greece is 1586 in Kerkyra Greece.. I will continue to look. The catalogue for Forni is without cost but may shed light by the title. Peter
Thanks suanj for the Perocco site, which is fascinating - though no Quartanos...
HI: Yes Artemisia, not are Quartano in the ancient families of Venice: you sure that around 1450 the surname are QuartanO and not QuartanA?

Hallo, Suanj, thank you for this. It's possible that the original name could be QuartanA, but it's interesting that the coat of arms is a punning rebus: a hand holding three symbols, meaning 'quarta? no!' This suggests to me that perhaps the original name, if not Quartano, could have been Quarta.suanj wrote:HI: Yes Artemisia, not are Quartano in the ancient families of Venice: you sure that around 1450 the surname are QuartanO and not QuartanA?

I have managed to track down some more family records, including an extract copied from what seems to be a French edition, from the 1920's, of a commentary on the "Libro d'Oro" of Corfu. The author does not know where the Quartano came from, and thinks they might have been Byzantine, if not Venetian. Unless there are more records extant now than in the 1920's, I think my search is doomed!
By the way, I tried these addresses, but the first only gets me to the tin.it home page, and the second gives me an error message. I tried looking in the sites, but could not find my way into anything useful. However, in view of the French commentary, and the fact that you have found nothing on 'Quartano', perhaps I would not find anything.
Thank you again very much for your help.
Hi: strange, the first link are exact, the home page: http://www.tin.it/veniva/avv/archivio/isp/veniva.htm
the second link are also exact but not available (in fact a similar link for Benevento town Archive are available http://wwwdb.archivi.beniculturali.it/S ... NEVENTO%22 )but for access to Venezia archive you test from home page http://wwwdb.archivi.beniculturali.it/U ... ndice.html

for question Quarta surname, I've found:
-QuartA in "Libro d'Oro" italian nobles;
- QuartarO surname in surnames list from XIII° to 1989 in Friuli Venezia Giulia region;
-QuartarA in Genova history;
- QuartanA surname are present in Sicily and all Italy, and also Quartano present only in an sicialian Common. I task original surname are Quartana, and Quartano an version of Quartana. For Quartana are traces sure in Sicily around 1700 of an Quartana family coming from Trapani, and transferred in Agrigento .. and probable around 1600 are traces of Quartana family noble in Genova..
-----------
From Italian Araldica are 2 branches of Quarta family:
1°- Quarta with relationship Arditi-Di Castelvetere families
2°-Quarta family in Roma- title Conte and Noble
ditto for Quartana Family are an record: Quartana various residence- title Conte.
