Sorrentino & Nappo of Poggiomarino

Post by Naples13 »

I am looking for information on my great grandparents Carmine Frank NAPPO (Naples) and his wife Bridget (SORRENTINO). They came over to the USA on or about 1903 with my grandfather Anthony Frank Naples. Bridget's sister was Rose (found in Ellis Island as Rosa SORRENTINO from Poggiomarino). I am very new to researching my Italian family and heritage. I am not quite sure where to begin looking for them beyond the USA. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Have you found the Ellis Island manifests for Antonio, Carmine, and Bridget(probably not her Italian name)? If you have, can you post them for reference. If you don't, that is the place to start.
I found a few possibilities, but it doesn't look like they all traveled together.
Where did they go? Was it Buffalo?

Yes, I believe they came separate to Buffalo and that Carmine had a brother or relative who also lived in NY city. I wasn't even aware of the name Nappo until my aunt showed us her birth certificate... (NAPPO) instead of Naples, my uncle has NAPOLI on his, he claims. Both of them are older than my father.

I believe all of these may be right. I am definately very grateful for your help. If the petition is Carmine's (aka Frank) how would I request a copy of the Petition or where would I look for naturalization records? Would that be my next step in crossing over to Italy?

Thank you again,

Marcy

Once you have established the birth place and dates of your great grandparents, you can begin your search for Italian records. Here are a few sites that can give you more information. The Family History Center has civil records for Poggiomarino.

Here is info about the town.
