I need help! I can't figure this out.

Post by Queen_Maleah »

I am lds and I need some help because I cannot find some relatives beyond the relatives that came to the US. I know that last names where changed when people came to america. Does anyone know how I can find the italian relatives who stayed in italy when the Ellis Island records orUS government records do not list thier names? I have looked everywhere and can't find anything. THis is very important and something that can't be overlooked. Does anyone know what the actual italian surname equivalents to these Americanized last names: Galente, Familathe. Those aren't their real italian last names, but the Americanized names. Please help! This is so important.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

There are so many possibilities!! Galante, Galanti is probably the closest. Do you know where in Italy these people came from?

Here is a website that might help.

Hi Maleah.

Here is what I have done so far to try and secure the names of relatives that stayed back in Sicilia.

My father died in 2001 and I have been advised by the intellegent people on this site that I could request a copy of his original application for a SSN card.

You can do this with any relative that has passed on so try and find the first person you know that came to america that applied for a SSN card and most likely the application will have the name of the town he/she was born in italy plus the names of he/shes parents ( that are mostlikey ) buried in Italy. Then you can go from there with your research. Whaen my fathers arrives I will advise what it states.

Application request range from 16 ( for a computer print out W/ Soc Sec # ) to 29 for the actual photocopy of the document W/ Soc Sec # ) if you do not have the SSN they charge a dollar more for each kind of request.

Hi Biff!
Nice manifest find :D .
No doubt Michele probably had quite a few
relatives there - it does seem to pop up quite
a bit on Castle Garden & Ellis.
I couldn't noodle out which one was his, the Capobianco
on the manifest was a great clue!

Hi MJ!
Neat :D ! Looks very possible.
Interesting that everyone else (from Sturno) was headed to Glen Cove, Angelina to Brooklyn.
