Searching for The Corneto Family

Post by corneto »

Hello everyone,

I’m an American citizen trying to trace my Italian genealogy. Specifically I'm trying to find out the name and as much information about my Great Grandfather. I’ve done some research and here are the facts I know for sure so far:

· My grandparents are first generation American citizens (born in NYC, USA and their their parents from Italy).

My grandfather was Gaetano Corneto

SSN: 099-09-1751

Born: 6 Apr 1906

New York

Died: 21 Feb 1975

Orange, California

My grandmother was Ida Spano

SSN: 123-22-9393

Born: 2 Nov 1905

New York

Died: 20 Jul 1992

Butte, California

· I know that Gaetano and Ida’s parents were born in Italy

· Corneto is a pretty rare name I've found so hopefully that will help me track him down.

That’s all I’ve been able to find so far. I guess my question is can anyone direct me to any person, company or website that I can contact to try and track down my great grandfather (father of Gaetano Corneto). I'd like to ultimately find any documentation that will lead me to obtaining dual citizenship.

Thanks,

Anthony Corneto

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Have you looked at Ellis Island records at all? If your grandparents were born here, then their parents were the immigrants. Here is the only Corneto which seems to be a possibility. What do you think?

Spano manifest is going to be impossible to find unless we know Ida's father's first name.

Hello,

It's clear now that you've found my great grandparents! I'm still amazed you found them so fast. I knew my grandmother Aida and grandfather Gaetano. I also knew my uncles Leonard and Thomas. So Lavena is my great grandfather and Francis is my great grandmother! Thank you!

Lavena Cornato 64 (Letterio right first name- Cornato?? father greek mother italian)italian imm. 1900
Francis Cornato 66 (italian imm 1907
Gaetano Cornato 24(son)
Aida Cornato 25 ( daughter in law)
Leonard Cornato 5 (grandson)
Thomas Cornato 3 ditto

So since my ultimate goal here is to start the process for requesting Italian citizenship, apparently I need to know everything I can about Lavena. Does anyone know how this process works? What more information do I need to find about my great grandfather Lavena? How do I apply and where do I apply?

Any help about this process would be so greatly apprecaited.

Thank you!!!

Hi, the right italian spelling of first name is Letterio and not Lavena; Lavena in the wrong transcription of Letterio... before of anything you can look up the Mormon's microfilms abt Messina civil records http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... umns=*,0,0
so you will have the right data abt your ancestors and after you can request the italian certificates,-helpful for dual citizenship- in Messina Town Hall, regards, suanj

Suanj,

Thanks again. A couple questions for you if you wouldn't mind.
1. How do you know that Letterio Corneto was born in Messina? Are you sure of that?
2. When I went to the website you mentioned for Messina Civil Records I can't seem to view any films. How do I do that?

Thank you!

Hey Anthony,

If you look at the ship's manifest I found, it says that Letterio came from Messina. Also, suanj is an expert on Italian names and localities. Believe me, if she says he was from Messina, he was from Messina.

The FHC has the records for Messina, but you cannot view them on line. You have to go to a Family History Center to order the microfilm. It costs approximately $6. per roll, take about 3 to 4 weeks to come in, and has to be viewed at the center. Use this link to find a center near you.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

You can request the birth certificate from Messina, but you must know the date of birth. That is why suanj suggested that you look for Letterio in the records. Both his first and last name are pretty rare, so you should be able to find him. Once you establish his birthdate you can send for birth records.

Also check other family records, to see if you can find out Frances's (probably Francesca) maiden name. If not, also look for Letterio's marriage record in the microfilm.

Ciao suanj,

I can't read the brother-in-law's name either, but take a look at the next two names. They are from Messina as well. Do you think all three are traveling together? This might be Letterio's sister and her husband.
