Post by DeniseNYC »

Hi,
I have seen mention of good Italian surname sites, but I cannot find the links. Can you please post them here?
Thank you,
Denise

Denise if you are looking for something definitive about Italian surnames then youcan purchase a dictionary of Italian surnames by De Felice..Title is DIZIONARIO DEI COGNOMI ITALIANI. If you just look for secondary sources (some are good but there interpretation of surnames can be skewed or when in doubt do what comes to mind types as well)=Peter=

You might want to try italia.indettaglio.it for information about the distribution of surnames throughout Italy. This site also offers quite a bit of information about the regions, provinces, and towns of Italy.

Very cool. I am trying to find the correct spelling of my great-grandmother's surname. Is this possible?

Hi again! Sorry for taking a while to respond I have been out of town:)

Her name is spelled Varigato, Virgato and Vergato on various records.

She is from the province of Salerno in Campania. I believe she was born in Eboli or Battipaglia.

Do you require additional info?

THANK YOU.

Possibly meaningful is the fact that there are many Vergato listings in the Italian telephone directory for the province of Salerno; neither of the other spellings are present...

Dear Johnny on the spot and all:

Thank you so very kindly for your responses! I had put my search on hold for the last year (while I was in school) and am back on the job again!

Very helpful to see that so many people have posted. I have faxed a request to Eboli for my great-grandmother's birth certificate with all three potential spellings of her last name.

Very interesting that there are only Vergato's in the phone book in Salerno.

Well, hopefully, I will receive something back from the comune and I will know for sure.

My very best,
Denise
