Searching for Guarisco, Digerolormo Sicily & Palermo

Post by Lindee »

Hello everyone, I am looking for my grandfather Salvatore R. Guarisco's (Gurisco and other spellings) parents. Born: February 1878 or so. He was from Gibellina, Sicily Italy. Brothers: Vincenzo, Rosario, Nicolo and possible a sister Lena which may have been a nick name for Antonina.

He married Antonina Digerolomo(Deligermio) no birth records. Her father Charles and mother Catherine. She had sisters; Lena, Mary, Josephine

Antonina and Salvatore immigrated to Louisianna in 1900 via Tramp Steamer ship, (n manifest) The lived in LA before settling in Spokane WA.
Children: Charles, Nicholas, Pasco, Joseph, Antonino, Lena, Mary, Josephine, Rose, Catherine, Tuispena, Cocoa (?) and Theresa

He passed away 1957 and she passed away in 1944, both in Spokane, WA. I believe they were married in Italy. Could have been in Palermo or Sicily. I found nturalization papers for him, but I am unable to find anything else at all on either one of them. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Microfilm records from 1821 to 1910 of Gibellina (Trapani province, Sicily)covering allbriths, marrriages and deaths are avilable at your nearest Mormon family history library. You can go to www.familysearch.org for nearest location and rent out film for about $5.00. If you go this route then take along a book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson which is a companion book. Bring along a magniftying glass since the records are handwritten. Copies of birth records can be made there.=Peter=

I have never found this info to this detail. I was having so much trouble in the sellling of thier last name. I bellieve it is the Digirolamo. Thank you, thank you! I have Naturalization papers on Salvatore Guarisco and Antonina Digirolamo was naturalized on his papers. Where do I go from here?

Hey Linda!
The FamilySearchLabs site is fairly new and has some really neat free
records. I believe it only requires that you register.
No doubt the original death certificates have more information on them.
I guess I would start with searching for the originals in the WA State
Archives
, spelling may be a challenge.

I have actully been on those sites and found nothing. They listed two matches that were not my grandfather. I hate these dead ends. I get on a roll and then the brakes go on. Any other places to search that you can suggest?

Linda, I see what you mean abt the digital archives
I guess death certificates after 1907 have to be ordered?
$20 each is about average for most states:
http://www.doh.wa.gov/EHSPHL/CHS/mailin.htm
It appears that Spokane County is the same price

VJ- thanks for the info. Would the LDS family history library have any of this information? I have done searches with every last name and come up blank. There are 2 mathches they found, but are not the ones i am looking for. Are there any other websites you have found valuable? I use ancestry but that is really limited. I have used blancepaige.it, but that wasn't much help.

Linda, they are on the new Family Search Labs site
(click on 'view all collections')
Washington Death Records 1907-1960 from FamilySearchLabs
Had to try a lot of spelling variations

VJ, thanks. I guess I need to broaden my searches with different spellings. Would you or anyone visiting this site know how to find ship manifests for steam trampers (this is what my cousin called it) that arrived in Louisiana? I am unable to find anything on this set of grandparents. the came from either Sicily or Palermo in 1900. I am assuming they got married there before boarding ship to come to the US.

Linda, looks like death records only go up to 1907
Spokane Films
(note; just click the links to view what information is
available in microfilm)

In case you haven’t tried other locations yet,
Family History Library Catalog Search
(note: I pretty much just use the ‘place’ search)

As for other sites, if you can't find a tree with some clues
on ancestry.com or rootsweb:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

And nothing comes up on a google web or google news archive search,
it may be worthwhile to look into ordering some critical vital
records. It can get expensive.

The most inexpensive route is ordering and viewing microfilm
from your nearest Family History Center. Your Italian records
will be full of terrific information.

Other avenues local to Spokane would be church, obituary and cemetery
records. Your census records should help you zero in on the church
your family used (if you don't already know it)
