the latin documents identify the father using an abbreviation and then the father's name in the correct case. i presume that if ignatius were the father of domenico it would be written:

domenicus qm. ignatii

is that correct?

Ignatius is a late Roman surname derived, some think is derived from Egnatius an Etruscan word. Ignati is an archaic Bulgarian form of Ignatius. How ecclesiastical Latin makes use of such "imported" names grammatically is beyond my ken. =Peter=

Agnati in Latin means paternal relations which may help with your translation. =Peter=

IG before........thank you for the clarification.....

Dear Livio I wish I knew Latin well enough to understand more of what you provided in the "dizionario" but it is very interesting nevertheless. =Peter=

That's right.
You can also find: Dominicus Ignatii, that means Domenico son of the living Ignazio.
If you find, instead, Dominicus Ignatius is a double first name: Domenico Ignazio (and the father's name will be in the next words).

However, if you post the pic we'll be glad to help you.
