A companion book for the microfilm at the FHL library is Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson and bring along a magnifying glass since the records are in that beautiful script that sometimes needs close scrutiny. =Peter=
Re: Where to write for birth records?
But it looks like I would have to write to Italy because my grandfather and one brother were born in the 1890's, the other brother born in 1887.
I would like to be able to write a letter asking for the birth parents of these three and asking if there are other children born to these parents - because there should be a sister that stayed in Italy - she sent her child over to my grandparents, and then there is a relative that my grandfather came to that he said is his sister but I found her marriage record and her parents are different than the ones listed on my grandfather's death record!
Thanks for the help!

When writing to Italy you can ask for a family certificate CERTIFICATO DI STATO DI FAMIGLIA STORICO inthe name of the head of the family which will list the spouse, children and all Births, marriages and deaths that the family experienced.

Re: Where to write for birth records?
so instead of saying(this is from a form letter that was converted into Italian" 'cerco informazioni sul mio nonno, Francesco Maresca' I would change to' certificato di stato di famiglia storico, Davide Maresca'. Davide being my grandfather's father.
I'm sorry to be a pain but I don't want to write anything wrong and end up insulting someone! I do not know any Italian except for the 'bad' words!!

First of all you certainly are not a pain and in fact we all welcome people such as yourself who are just as interested in family genealogy as we are.
Yes you would qrite Certificato di Stato di Famiglia Storico instead of requesting a birth, marriage or death certificate. Addinthe name of the Head of family as you indicated.
For you own edification you might wish to go to http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... civile.asp
In this website you can fill in the approproate informationin english then check the submit button. The letter will then be translated and shown to you. Be sure to print it. =Peter=

Re: Where to write for birth records?
Thanks everyone for all the help!!
I will get in touch with the FHC, there is one not to far away from me, to order film to look at. If no results there, then I will write to Italy!
Again, thank you.
