Birth cert required to get married in NYC?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Birth cert required to get married in NYC?

Post by whymse »

Hi all,

My GGF has no birth cert from his birth year of 1887. I know his birth date from his baptism form, and his WWI draft card. I have searched for years around that date, but had no luck finding the record. The Municipal Archives also turned up no records on two separate searches.

My question is: He was married in 1912 in NYC (Brooklyn)... Does anyone know if birth certificates were required to marry at that time? If so, there may be a delayed certificate in existence.

I have read that many people got delayed birth certificates for social security, but my GGF died in an accident in 1921 (before SS).

I know this is an obscure question, but I hope someone knows the answer.

Thanks.

Try www.italiangen.org and look up marriage in Brooklyn and perhsaps other information as well. You might be able to obtain his application for marriage licence that may contain a record of the document he presented to attest to his irth details bit it a birth record, passport or someother acceptasble form of document. =Peter=

Thanks for the suggestion. I have his marriage certificate, so I will call the Muncipal Archives in NYC and see if there is any way to get a copy of the application for license that may have info on what proof was used (if any) to apply.
