VALENTE FAMILY - MONTE CASINO

Post by TinaB »

I am trying to find Dominico Valente born around c1862 his father was Antoino. Dominico had a brother Luigi born around c1867. Their occupations are recorded as musicians then both became ice cream sellers. Dominico and Luigi ended up in Belfast Northern Ireland around c1880. Dominico married Maria Teresa Capitano who was born in Rocco d'Evandro. They married in Belfast in 1887.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!

The Valente surname is concentrated in Villa Latina, Picinisco, area which is close to Rocca D'Evandro. Records prior to 1865 are on microfilm at the Mormon Church. www.familysearch.org.
You can see photos of all places on my website and information on how to search the films

Tina there is no record avilable for Monte Cassino in the Mormon family history library so your best bet to request a birth record is to go to the provincial offices at ARCHIVIO DI STATO DI FROSINONE which is the provincial capital for Monte Cassino as they should have duplicate records. Go to www.nonsolocap.it and put inFrosinone and look for an address for the Archivo mentioned above.

You will have to send a form letter requesting the duplicate record. Go to www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/saviello2.html

The Archivio di Stato in Frosinone only has reconstructed records for Cassino AFTER 1866. Before that there is a full set of records prior to 1865 at the Archivio di Stato di Caserta.
All of the above are on microfilm at the LDS under Cassino. Montecassino is the name of the famous abbey completely destroyed during WW2 and of course of the mountain.

My husband's grandfather was Donimic Valente, an ice-cream dealer/musician born 1884 in the Napoli area - the family always thought it was Monte Casino. HE had a brothers Antonio and Giovanni - we think that the father's name was Guisepe. Doninic married Maria Annunciata Martino and they lived in Tadcaster (possibly Doncaster) and Leeds.
Have you any further information?

Hi Moya

My gr gr grandfather Dominico married Maria Theresa Capitona from San Pietro Infine they both lived their days in Belfast Northern Ireland with the occasional trip back to Italy.
I think we do not have the same lineage.
I am really sorry.
All the best and good luck. :(

Hi Everyone
I made a mistake with my last post. My gr gr grandmother was born 19 May 1864 Maria Teresa Capitona in Rocca d'Evandro - Prov. of Caserta. I have a photo of her, my gr gr grandfather, my gr grandfather as well as 1 x unidentified female and 4 x unidentified males taken in c1920. I have been told that the VALENTE family came from either - San Pietro Infine, Villa Latina or Monte Cassino (see my problem) I am more than willing to forward the photo to anyone who can genuinely help. My personal email is: olandtina@bigpond.com.au

Fredoniapeaches, that would be Frank and Sam. Frank just died recently in Arizona at I believe the ripe old age of 97 ! Considering the line of work, a very nice life ! you can read the article @ www.mafiatoday.com. type in Frank Valenti in the search box for the story.
His replacements in Rochester were all neighborhood people where I come from..... and the difference is in the spelling, TinaB is looking for Valente, and Frank was spelled Valenti, lucky for you TinaB ! It's an interesting story though, of mob rule in Rochester and how after Frank was exiled to Arizona the A and B team wars broke out.

Hi Moya
I think I can help. I live in Tadcaster, attend St Joseph's RC church and am doing some research on 9 names commemorated on a plaque in the church - all war dead from 1914-1918. I can identify 8 of the people but the last - Antonio Valenti - has porved difficult. I thought that the name was Portugese - there are Antonio Valente's who fought in the war and I have a gravestone for one killed in 1918 at Neuve Chappelle in te German Spring offensive. However, there is no record of many portugese living in Tadcaster so I think the Anthony Valenti I am after is Italian and related to your search. What I know so far is that an Antonio Valente (i and e would have been indistinguishable) was born in Pontefract (very close to Tadcaster) in 1998 which would have been the right age for seervice in World War 1. I know that an Antonio Valenti married Assunta M Martino in the fourth quarter of 1914 in Tadcaster - St Joseph's. There seems to have been the birth of a daughter Francesca A Valenti registered in the fourth quarter of 1917. I will go back to the St Joseph's register and find out more.
Best wishes

Greg

There are Valente families in Scotland too that came from the area near Atina/Villa Latina, not far from Cassino. But I dont recall any of the Christian names you have mentioned.

If you get Maria Teresa Capitone's birth certificate it MIGHT tell you who she married and where they were from. If they married in Italy the marriage probably took place in Rocca D'Evandro. It is close to Cassino etc.

Tina. Was reading through your post and thought I may have an offshoot branch of your family for you...

In the U.K. Census [1891 Census:- 6 Chapel Street, Leeds RG12/3691 p12/71.5 ED 37]

I have a gr'gr'grandma Maria Grazia Enziano who lived with a family of Valente's who were Street Musicians and Ice-Cream Dealers and we think from Cassino in Italy...

Head Ferdenando ENZIANO married 34 Street Musician Italia
Wife Maria Grazia ENZIANO married 26 Street Musician Italia
Bdr Antonio VALENTE married 42 Street Musician Italia
Bdr Guiseppa VALENTE married 25 Street Musician Italia
Bdr Dominic VALENTE (their son) 5 months n/a Yorkshire
Bdr Mingo VALENTE (their nephew) 15 Musician Italia

[Bdr = boarder for this census]

The names and occupations seem right and I know my gr'gr'grandma returned to Casino after remarrying one Giovanni DelliColli.

I would be grateful to hear if you have come across any info on these Valentes/Enzianos as we dont know why my ancestor remarried and cant find what happened to her first husband.

I've got my Irish side back to 1790 so good luck with your search.

Hi Guys
Thank you so much for all your help. I have heard so many different stories over the years of where Dominico is actually from. Some say Monte Cassino, San Pietro Infine or Villa Latina. I did however find an Antonio Valente a musician from Villa Latina aged 30 who was living with a brother in-law also born in Villa Latina in the 1881 Scotland Census making him born c1850. Occupations match what my 2xgr grandfather's occupation is also. The date of birth for Antonio is about -/+ 5 years of my 2xgr grandfather Dominico.

The Italians seemed to be very traditional with there passing of names; ie: first born son is named after the paternal grandfather second born son after the maternal grandfather. Well this seems to be the case with my family. As my 3xgr grandfather's name was Antonio (the name of my gr grandfather was Antoino and my grandfather was Dominic) according to Dominico's marriage certificate. Therefore the lineage should be easy to trace ...... sort of ......
I have one other brother's name also ......... so now all I have to do is find a father named Antoino who had son's with the names I have and the same mother's name all from the same town ........... LOL .............. should be easy :D
