Italian Grandfather

Post by dodeska »

I'm hoping that someone could help me understand where exactly my gr. granparents were from.
John Dodeska (name was changed to Dodesky when he entered U.S.)
Born 1842 in Tyrol, Italy - married a German lady - Barbara Stutterine in 1870 in West Farland Germany. The West Farland was taken from Barbara's obit. but I know that the name West Farland is incorrect. Barbara also answered the question where born, Tyrol, Germany. John anwered the question, what language do you speak: Italian and Barbara answered: German

Can someone tell me exactly where John and Barbara were born?

Thanking you in advance.

Welcome to the Forum!
We can try to help.
Do you have your US census records?
Sometimes they may have clues to other records/information.
Also, do you have their marriage or death records?
Thanks!

Have you been able to locate the 1888-1889 Ship Manifest or
John Sr's Naturalization paperwork?
They may contain clues to the birth locations
Thank you, Valarie

Janice,
Does this record belong to your family?
It may help locate a ship manifest if the family traveled together.
Thank you!

Hi Janice,

I'm posting a link to wikepedia that will explain why they both said Tyrol but spoke differnet languages
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trentino-A ... 3%BCdtirol

also giving you a link for a map from the 1600's through 1795 which shows how that area was divided. You'll be able to see it's location relative to Venice
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historic ... e_1648.jpg

this link will show you the area in the 1880's
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historic ... s_1882.jpg

This last link from american.edu gives you alot of details about tyrol
http://www.american.edu/TED/ice/tyrol.htm

I hope this might clear up some of the confusion for you as to why they both said Tyrol, one person being italian and the other german.

Hope this helps a little bit.

The tyrol is a location in the Trentino Alto Adige province which has switched between Italian and Austro -German sovreignty on a number of occasions so historical references are suffer from split personality as it were.=Peter=

That is my grandmother, Mary Emma Dodeska. I'm really confused now because on Barbara's death certificate it states her surname was Stutterine. I also have my grandparents marriage record but it was under Todescki. LaSalle County has since corrected it but my great aunt Margaret is still under Todescki. I've looked for the ship's manifest and all those records seem to be missing or not translated yet. My Uncle George Howarth's wife said that the Dodeska family came into a Baltimore port. I've been to their gravesite in Streator, Illinois and they are buried under the name of Dodeska. My brothers and I all knew that their real name was Dodeska. I have found a woman in Germany by the name of Tereza Dodeska but I can't get her to answer me. John Jr. owned a lot of property in LaSalle County, Illinois and a parcel in Wisconsin when he died. He had no Will so there was a big trial which last 2+ years. I even have copies of that trial but nothing in it worthing noting. I know that John Sr. and Jr. were Catholic's but wife/mother and sisters were all Protestants. I've tried to obtain the records but the Church in Kangley has closed, those records were sent to Streator but now that Church has closed and I've been unable to locate them. John and Barbara had 5 daughter, Margaret (she married Peter Clauser who was also from Tirol, my grandmother, Mary (William Bell Howarth) Anna (married at least 3 times and lived in Chicago), Gussie (who married Harry Thornton) and Minnie (died 3 weeks after being married) and 1 son John Jr.

That's their whole life that I know in one paragraph.

Thanks for everyone that has answered me.
