Re: Francesco and Amalia Massa
Documentation needs to be located which will reveal the maiden name, and that of the parents, as well as birthplace.
Ship manifest, draft registration, naturalization, and church records are the best place to start. Obituary and cemetery records are another.
A marriage application for the daughter born in Italy may reveal town of birth and mothers maiden name.
Obtaining a birth record for one of her children may also reveal her town of birth if the census info is correct and she was born in Italy.

Re: Francesco and Amalia Massa
Also the death certificates could list the birth place...
From the site:
http://www.italiangen.org/NYCDeathSearch.asp
maybe this could be the death date for Amalia:
Massa Amalia
61 y
Sep 4 1931
Certificate number: 18937 Kings
If you think these dates are concerning your ancestor you can request the certificate:

Re: Francesco and Amalia Massa
Ciao Lee,
I was only considering that sure Francesco, his wife and the little daughter are listed on an "early" arrival manifest so possible there will be no place of birth or last residence listed... Francesco was born on 1868 so I don't think there will be a Military enlistment for him.
I saw just some death certificates and it's not a rule they have the exact birth place listed (often there is only "Italy") but it could be, sometimes... (maybe the poster could be lucky in this!)
At least there can be the parent's names or the exact birth date...
On the same site I found also a possible record for Francesco:
Massa Francesco
70 y
Sept 28 1938
Certificate number 18905 Kings
There is another Massa Francesco who died in the Kings county on 1929 (age 68) but as I found the 1930 census for Francesco and his wife I think it's possible the first I wrote is the correct one...

Re: Francesco and Amalia Massa
The earlier ship manifest do not contain much in way of info....which can be very frustrating.
But the death record should contain some relevant information, and when you are at a brickwall.....each document should be looked at for any clues they may hold.....
